I had a "bad" brake fault with my 110 a while back, seemed like there was no vacuum assistance at all.

Fortunately I had just finished building my project90, so had two vehicles side by side. the 90 brakes were far better and sharper than the 110's.

So after several bleeds later, the 110's were still rubbish, I started swapping other parts over, master cylinder and pedal unit.

After I'd swapped the master cylinder and vacuum unit over the brakes improved, and it was only because I had the bonnet off of the 90 one when I jumped out of it after turning the engine off, I could hear a "HSSSsssssss....", air leaking.

It was the O ring between the pedal assy and the servo. Whipped it apart and removed the O ring from another pedal I had, and hey presto! instant better brakes.

Worth checking.

right, so your saying when you remove the hose off the servo there is strong suction? but the pedal doesn't sink when you start up? My 109 thread

When I took the hose off there was strong suction. When they guy at the garage pumped the brake pedal then started the engine with the brake depressed he said the brake pedal was sinking. He also tested the servo by placing a hose from some wacky device with smoke in which told him the servo wasn't losing pressure.

He's asked me to take it back first thing in the morning to "get to the bottom of it"....

sounds like servo should be ok

back to air in system , wheel bearings , master

if it was me I would check for play in wheel bearing first , then try bleed again , then master

Good news update! As recommended by Munch we checked the bearings and re-bled. There was a little play in the back bearings so we nipped them up. Next we re-bled the system. Air was found in two calliper joins. Test drive and hey presto... braking is now good, no more spongey first press of the pedal. Further bonus.... the brake pad rattle has all but gone. It appears the play in the rear bearings enabled the pads to be forced back further into the calliper allowing them to rattle. Something to bear in mind if you're suffering from pad rattle rather than doing what I did... buying new callipers and pads.

Thanks to all for help and suggestions... very much appreciated.

I was about to post some similar symptoms of the brake not biting right away after you first start the engines and have to do a few pumps to get the system operating normally.

If it helps any, I just had my wheel bearings re-greased and changed out discs as mine were worn about 5mm inward already.

The vehicle also drowned and was resurrected. Water in the cabin was up until just below the bottom of the radio.

So I still check all of the items mentioned then?

I have a spongy pedal for the 1st press after turning on full lock. I also suffer from rattling pads.
I will do the rears too and see if it resolves the issue 2014 - current ..... 2003 defender td5 90 (my car)
