It is becoming clear that in my line of work a winch is going to come in very handy - not for off-roading obviously, but for loading my trailer. I am thinking of getting a winch but not sure what the best route to take. I could mount an electric one on the trailer, but this could upset the balance of the trailer, and will reduce the payload slightly - I understand a winch can be upto 50-60KG? I'd run a lead and socket from the 110 to power the winch rather then use a separate battery.
The other option is to mount one on the 110, I was thinking a front mounted one could be used, with a towball on the front to hold the trailer - BUT that would be a lot of hassle (and lost time when its all against the clock/tacho), is there any kind of mounting available for the back? Ive got a warn 9000 on the front and tow ball as you sugessted, turning round does not take as long as you may think, but for quick light loads i use a hand winch quick easy and a good bit of blood pumping excersise. mine is not a bolted down one its a mule hook on to the front and 1 line 900Kgs 2line 1800kgs and really quick, even more handy for you in Bicester i got both the winch cw bumper and the hand mule from Sling and tackle Milton Keynes if memory serves me correctly 3rd Avenue near the big Asda/Walmart, B&Q and Tesco If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

How about one of those demountable winches that hook over a towball? You could fit a towball to the trailer and connect it via anderson connectors. John

Firstly make sure the trailer can take a winch ie mount safely oh also make sure to get some training if you have not used a winch before.
Seen some real horrors in the past, don't be tempted to go the synthetic route as a trailer type of recovery lends it self to a steel cable (loads of drag and catch points) |

I had a bateson triaxle with a hand winch fitted but had a 8274 on the front of the 110.
I found this covered most problems, if the vehicle was dead but easy to get to I would use the trailer hand winch (very light at about 15KG max) if the vehicle was on a bad feild, in a shed or other nightmare position I would un-hook the trailer and use the 8274, sitting in the vehicle to steer it and using the wireless remote. This set up never let me down. When I brought the trailer new I asked about the electric winch but the guy pointed out if you go on a job and the batterys flat or the winch plays up your stuck, the hand winch will always work! |

Were I to go for a leccy winch Id have a power lead direct from the Landrover.

Might have a genuine land rover warn winch and bumper available, purchased january this year, pic of it in my gallery, no idea of price yet though, someone already trying to get me to sell to them but have not agreed price or sale

Hitching difficulties
 Big Fog showed me his rear camera the other day - great bit of kit VERY wide angle shows the rear lights and cars behind all in one shot very reasonably priced piece of kit for a TV screen, monitor etc think it was £110 - I want one, better than reversing sensors and as Big Fog says you won't reverse over your kids which is always a risk with my two dippy dipsticks!  Or get a bumper camera for £90 just googled one  |
