77k 2.4 lost power, back after Ign cycle
History: 77k miles on 2.4 Puma 90, 2007 vehicle. Been driving on /off for last 7hours including Forum meet. had already been travelling at 70mph for 10mins or so.

Sat on the motorway around 70. depressed accelerator to go up a hill and maintain speed and it just didnt 'feel right' anyway accelerator to the floor and struggling then to maintain 50mph on hill, down to 5th. No smoke and certainly no poke!

felt like lack of fuel to engine. stopped in layby after coming off mway 2miles later. checked fuel tank - no vac. so all good there. sluggish to pull away would rev to 3k and top at 55mph. no sign of any smoke and less audible noise from turbo. ie not sounding normal.

stopped, turned off engine and full power restored. All back to normal.

Fault codes that came up were U3F01 and C2440, not the normal P codes i see. anyway was running fine as code read was after the ign cycle, deleted codes. Have driven another 15 miles and its like it never happened....

Any suggestions welcome please. Cheers

Variable vanes in turbo stuck. Mine did it, got more regular and eventually we could reset whilst driving.

I swapped a new turbo in, but have read somewhere that a cleaner spray via the inlet will work. Wait until it happens again, without stopping engine, open bonnet and get someone to rev it and watch for actuator moving, if it doesn't its the vanes, if it does, back to the usual VCV. etc

Good luck
Keith

thank you Keith.

The vehicle in question is worked hard weekly towing so if its is the vanes i would be surprised as the truck get opened up regularly but will check as you suggest.

VCV was done last month for irratic idle. this is first motorway run since VCV change though. Cheers

Mine too, lots of local towing with no problem, started happening on long trips, between here and Portsmouth, St Malo & Lucon, sometimes all OK to as often as every 5 miles & usually after long steady throttle position, then putting your foot down for a hill.

I saw a YouTube with a Disco 3 with similar fault, IIRC dropped the air filter out and sprayed a can of something in and then all was good!

Mine also did this and eventually found it to be sticky turbo vanes, not all the time just now and again. Had it down to a fine art of switching off and restarting without slowing down too much.

Censored , thats not great, so with the sticky vane thing was it always after a period of high boost? Cheers

Yes it was usually trundling along fine, let off throttle a bit power back on and it died off. Switch off then on again and was fine. Reading codes showed as turbo underboost. Eventually took arm off turbo actuator and found it as sticky on last wee bit of travel. Spent some time moving it up and down to free off then stuck a bottle of turbo cleaner in tank and it’s been fine ever since.

Turbo cleaner..... Iris just the stuff you add a bottle of to your fuel various makes STP, Wynn’s, Forte etc. About a tenner a bottle and you add to a full tank of diesel. It is meant to clean off carbon on turbo vanes etc.

So after 1.5k miles it's just done it again.

I tried a fuel additive but I don't see how adding it to the fuel cleans the turbo inlet vanes.

Anyway, next idea, something through the air intake to clean it, Any recommendations ? Cheers

You might want to ask Opie Oils as they have a lot of know how and likely the products and aren’t going to try and sell cheapo products. Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧

Sounds like it could be fuel contamination.

The Puma is prone to having a build up of organic material in the fuel tank that collects together to make what looks like cat poo which blocks the fuel pick up, limiting fuel flow. When you turn off the engine the pump stops and the blockage floats away so when you restart the engine runs properly for a bit until the pick up sucks in the obstruction again.

We've had this on two of our Pumas, it is a tank out job to clean out. The second one started to happen on a long trip, managed to reset it half a dozen times, but eventually the pump sucked up some that got stuck in the inlet and wouldn't clear to it was a recovery job. Is there such a thing as too many Defenders?....
