Road Tax
Just prompted by the 2.2 v 2.4 tdci thread, I started to once again get annoyed at the £500+ a year road tax on my 2.4. It makes me so angry that I can't even look at the paperwork to see exactly how much it is! Mad

The question I have is that as cars that were under that now abandoned tax scheme slowly disappear and the ones that remain start to become classics, is the amount I pay ever likely to come down, or do I just have to suck it up until the old girl reaches 40 years old? Are old obsolete road tax categories ever reviewed and revised (up or down) or do they just remain at what they were? I guess at least if it were frozen, it might feel a bit cheaper due to inflation over time.

I know if I lived in Ireland, or Finland £500 would seem like a bargain, but it still irks me that an identical vehicle made in a different year or missing a couple of windows pays a fraction of that amount. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

you got to wait pal, Thank tony blair and his mates for doing away with the 20 year old classic tax, So we all have to wait till the car is 40years old. I have looked at Pumas as a replacement, but the tax is far to much for me to justify it. When you can pick up the same motors for less tax etc. Plus I am trying to put cash away for a gaff too. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

Work it out as a proportion of the cost of running the vehicle for the year and it’ll make you feel better.

Remember, not all 2.4’s are £500+ road tax.

Which 2.4’s aren’t in the £500 band? Commercial ones?

In the coming years I think we're likely to see road tax rise for all diesel and petrol vehicles that aren't up to certain emission standards.
This is the easiest way for the government to 'encourage' drivers to move to cleaner engines or EVs.
I'd love to be proven wrong on this.

2.4 DCPU and DCHCPU are N1 as well.

Low emission vehicles including hybrids and EVs will face the biggest tax hikes because the country's economy won't work unless RFL revenue is maintained. Eventually EVs will cost as much as diesels.

The high road tax is annoying but in the money drain that is Defender ownership barely a bump in the road.

I'm unfortunately caught in this trap with my 56 plate 110 TD5 Station Wagon. Despite the cost of tax I still purchased it over lower tax models I looked at based on the overall condition. I pay the tax via the monthly direct debit which makes it feel a little less of a hit.
Overall it just has to be accepted and the difference in my eyes is relative to the amount that can easily be spent on maintenance. Hence as said in the scheme of overall running and maintenance costs is lost.
