So, my car is a Tdi SW rather than a TD5, but I don't think that makes any difference in this instance.
I have exactly the same issue, and if I open the door and look at the underneath, well there's virtually nothing left. From the outside, you just wouldn't know - the door looks good and solid. I bought a set of 2nd row doors from SP4x4 in galved steel. I have to say they're not fitted yet. They go to the paintshop in a couple of weeks time; and then onto the car. But they look and feel pretty good to me. Just suggesting it as another option to look at. I've just been doing some googling and ended up on their site, I would be interested to see what fitment is like, I'd be tempted to do all 4 at once to save on body shop costs, plus the doors that are removed may sell for a fee so better than nothing.

When I replaced the doors on my old Tdi 90, I went for 2nd hand Puma ones. It wasn't cheap but they are better then the earlier design in every way. Darren

Unfortunately rear 110 puma doors in decent condition are extremely expensive (we'll they are from reputable suppliers).
I've been looking for a set of puma doors for my parents 110. So far the cheapest I could find a decent set of 110 ones complete was £3200 ![]() I'll be going the SP4x4 route at some point ![]() 1990 Vogue SE Triumph Tiger Explorer 1200 Td5 90 Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic50767.html Tdi 110 Thread https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic69562.html RRC Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic54492.html Instagram http://www.instagram.com/george_grafton |

Well, in fact this is more or less what I'll be doing. I got the rear doors from Sp; and found a set of Puma doors for the front. Only because it saved £200/£300 on the SP ones. On the flip side, I'll have to do more cleaning and prep with the Puma ones. All four doors booked into the paintshop in early March; I'll then be fitting them in the couple of weeks after that, before the whole car goes to the paintshop shortly after. If my car was new and shiny, I maybe wouldn't need this last step, but it's the opposite - old and faded - so shiny new doors would make it look daft. So, if you're not in any rush, I'll doubtless be taking pics and outlining the job on my 'rebuild' thread. The only difficulty with buying 2nd hand puma doors is finding a pair that were acquired with the original owners permission....

A couple of years ago fitted a set of 4 galvanised doors from SP4x4. Not cheap but I was impressed with the quality and fit. After much deliberation I went for the steel skin version. The skin is zintec rather than dip galvanised. apparently to avoid warping etc. Before going to the spray shop they needed all the threads recutting and a few holes re-drilled to remove excess zinc, but apart from that it has been a straightforward (but time-consuming) job. The overall cost was ~£2K. It would've been a lot more if I'd not done all the work (except for the painting which I entrusted to a local bodyshop who had experience of spraying galvanised steel).
I don't have any regrets over my choice. This was one of the doors being readied for the paintshop: ![]() Click image to enlarge
I'm happy to provide photos to show fitment if required. Don't forget that all Defenders are different though...
I hoped to raised a few £ from selling the old doors but even at £40 for the set they didn't find a local buyer for 6 months so in the end I gave them away to avoid scrapping them. |
