Great photo with the grandchildren!

Took a similar photo last year, they still had a secondhand Defender IN the showroom then.

Too early to clean off the winter muck?

That's a seriously nice S2. Thumbs Up My 1953 80in has a similar patina to the bodywork with perhaps a bit less paint on the bonnet and wing tops due to the Australian sun.

I lucked onto a pair of Avon Traction Mileage tyres locally which don't appear to have covered many miles (still have the little bumps on) and are not hard as nails or cracking. Just need to find another pair in 6.00-16 now...

Yes, I've had a little mini-Charles devil on my shoulder, whispering in my ear since the Maldon show Wink

I have now sourced a decent full set;

It's been four years since I recommissioned PGV and a few small niggles were now needing attention.

I've been having a bit of an ongoing challenge with the brakes. Winding back the clock a few weeks, I had already fitted new brake shoes all round due to some concerns with the locator pins falling out of Mintex shoes, rendering the brakes completely inoperative. The new shoes were not making much contact with the drums and I had a very long pedal.

The master cylinder has been weeping slightly for a while and needed to be replaced. I was suspicious that air was getting back into the master cylinder and not helping with the long pedal. It was due a brake fluid change anyway in addition to the bi-annual oil change. So, I sourced a NOS Land Rover one and an OE clutch cylinder because it made sense to change it at the same time. In pursuit of a firmer brake pedal I also decided to fit a set of Goodridge classic braided brake hoses.

When I went to collect them the supplier couldn't find the NOS item and recommended a Bearmach part as the best available aftermarket alternative. I fitted it, and with some careful bleeding of the cylinder off the vehicle, before fitment and got a much firmer pedal.

Unfortunately it all went downhill from here. I spotted a little brake fluid in the footwell and at first wasn't sure if I had spilled some. I did have a small incident with the Eezibleed, due to the difficulty in getting a good seal on the old bean can, before putting it back in the box, cursing it and reverting to the two man method. However the next morning I found that the whole reservoir of fluid had drained through the cylinder into the footwell and onto the floor.

I got a replacement Bearmach cylinder and repeated the rigmarole of removing and refitting the whole brake assembly from the bulkhead and re-bleeding again only to find that this cylinder was also faulty. What started as a small weep down the pushrod when the pedal was operated soon deteriorated into a steady drip. So much for the three year warranty...

Running out of options now and determined not to fit another Britpart/Bearmach cylinder that would only last a few years (at best) I paid an exorbitant sum for a Girling cylinder from Craddocks. When this arrived I was slightly annoyed to find that it was missing the pushrod and retaining washer; I think everything I've order from them has been missing some essential bits...but I was able to reuse the ones from the original.

Repeated the removal and re-fitment rigmarole again and then final bleed, wishing I had bought shares in brake fluid, finally got all the air out of the system. I now have a dry footwell (and eyes). Actually the brake pedal was ridiculously good, operating in the top third of its travel. I actually went round and backed off the adjusters to lower the biting point from where I had set them with a little drag to aid the bedding-in of the new shoes.

Final job this weekend was to clean up all the spilled fluids, sand and lots of other accumulated tools and stuff that had been scattered across the garage floor. PGV had been getting frequent hose downs in-between. It turned into a marathon garage clear out with half a dozen trips to the tip to regain some floor space, but now I have room for another!

The above reminded me of a photo I took when I first got it home in 2014. The garage floor has never been clean since then and isn't again now Rolling with laughter

There is always room for another Thumbs Up By the way my friend who restores Series Land Rovers for a living recently had some Bearmach master cylinders fail immediately after fitting, seems like they had a bad batch.

Funnily enough, I did exactly the same thing... and once the space was free, within four weeks, another Series found its way into the space beside the 2 Rolling Eyes Very Happy

It wasn't planned... honestly Whistle
