Do I need to undercoat Dirt Defenders before paint?

And if so, what would you recommend?

My thoughts would be yes. You will need a primer that is designed for flexible plastic, you can buy this in a spray can from Halfrauds in different colours - check the primer colour for the final paint colour. you'll also need panel wipe to degrease & probably worth keying the surface using suitable grade wet and dry. I'd also flat the primer back between coats, as well as between colour & lacquer coats.

Not painted dirt defenders but these were the last project I did - this is before the final flatting back & lacquering.

A powder or spray guide coat can also be useful, especially for finishing primer before base coat.

You do flat with solid colours between coats but not with metallics.

VVS - That took some time and effort for such a nice finish.

I just keyed and plastic primed mine before base coat and lacquer. Still good 18 months later

They're the shells to a pair of Peltor Sporttac electronic ear defenders. Did them back in the summer after a supposed professional did a

job starting with no primer & with a lot of overspray due to poor masking. Decided I could do the job better myself so I did!
