Cold Idle Issue
My Td5 seems to have always had trouble with cold idle ever since we bought it 4years ago.

It usually only manifests itself in colder weather.

When first started it fires straight up and ticks over nicely at what i would say is a fast idle. After a few minutes of idling the idle speed drops slightly and the idle becomes a little more uneven, not too bad generally if it has just sat at idle since started but with the bonnet open the varying tone is apparent.

If the vehicle is driven from cold, when stopping at junctions the idle is really bad and i would describe it as 'chugging' where it is almost like it runs on 4cyl. This continues whilst stationary and you can actually feel the vehicle rocking slightly with the unevenness. It revs freely if you put your foot down and doesnt seem to suffer any other running issues.

Once the engine had warmed up its fine and the idle is stable.

Does anyone have any ideas? In the time i have had it, the following has been done , in addition to the usual service items, which has made no difference to the idle:

    EGR blanked;
    MAF changed (twice);
    MAP cleaned;
    Inlet and exhaust gaskets changed;
    Injector seals changed (several times)
    Injector loom changed (no oil at red plug);
    Fuel Pressure Reg replaced;
    Fuel Pump changed;
    De-catted and mid box deleted;
    Boost hoses and intercooler changed;
    Glowplugs changed;

Mines also done this since I bought it. It’s fine during summer months but dislikes cold running in the winter until it’s got some heat in it. There are a few other threads on here about it and as far as I know it is fairly common. Interestingly I’ve done all the things on your list except the fuel pump and glow plugs! Sorry that I don’t have an answer but I’d be interested to know if there’s a solution! 2002 Defender 110 CSW TD5

Thanks all. Although i agree it seems common, i am not convinced that it is normal. It seems a coincidence that everyone else who i have spoken to that has one that does it seems to be an early (pre 03) model. Maybe something in the ECU software was changed after that?

The CPS is a good shout. Never touched that, never did work out if it should have a shim or not!

Mines also suffers this same issue, never used to do it had the injector seals done years ago and the egr was removed at the same time. It’s pretty much done it ever since then. I’m fairly sure it’s temperature related as I’ve just fitted an electric coolant heater it was -7 here the other morning plugged it in for 20 minutes and it ran as sweet as a nut from the get go

Never had any cold idle issues with my 2004 Defender TD5.

It starts and idles steadily no matter how cold it is. My previous Defender (a 2006 90 TD5 bought new) was always fine, as was the 2003 TD5 SW we had for three years from 2014.

TD5 Chugging
Ours does it too.

We’ve done pretty much everything that the OP has had done, and it’s still the same.

Ours is not cold weather or startup related though.

It mostly occurs when we have been sitting at tickover for a while, which we do a lot on our off road course as we explain the various sections and hazards to the customer and each challenge.

It doesn’t even seem to effect the engine once you have got past that initial chugging after being sat at idle for a while.

We would just like to get rid of it if possible, so if someone finds a solution do post it please!

Recently my 04 XS has been similar. In that when very cold it chugs as if only 4cyl and sometimes doesnt fire, then dies. Second turn of the key no issues. Instagram @defender_ventures

Bankz, that doesn’t sound correct. Have you tried priming the fuel system first thing in the morning after it has sat all night. If not try it and check how noisy it is, then try starting.

Chugging when very cold is standard as the Td5 only has four glow plugs even though it has 5 cylinders.

If it has the decat and egr delete it’s pretty normal. I know 4, 15p td5’s which all do it since these mods were done before and after a remap. If it’s standard without the mods I would probably be more concerned. As again I have a few 10p engines I know which are all Standard and one 15p which runs smooth no matter the temperature!

Might be worth checking the cylinder balance?

Balances are within range according to the nanocom.

Fuel system is primed and working well.

Its only on very cold mornings, its garaged 90% of the time and starts fine in there. Also fine after sitting outside the yard at work all day. I think the glow plugs may need doing, just waiting for some time. Instagram @defender_ventures

Worth replacing the heater plugs for sure. But to my knowledge the td5 will fire without any heat! I had a 52 plate and the relay was faulty but no matter how cold it would start. But did puff white smoke! Until i fitted a new relay. Any white/blue smoke from yours?

I also know through work another Land Rover specialist who is Censored hot on td5’s. He mentioned once that the starter motor can interrupt the signal to the injectors which can cause the lumpy or rough idle once started. But I don’t think this is the problem in these cases.

It was worse before I changed the starter for a Brand new Denso. Crank sensor is a year old genuine one too. Soon as it starts it idles perfectly Instagram @defender_ventures
