Have you checked your drive flanges? Common cause for driveline clunk.

The star shaped piece with 5 bolts in center of wheel. Take rubber cap off and check for play with wheel off ground. Should be no movememnt on the splines. Just changed to Ashcroft HD ones myself, a 10mn job no more difficult than taking wheel off (which you do not have to do). Clucking vanished. |

if you have alloys you do need to remove the wheels, these flanges are really a service item, grease from new and then check every 20000 miles or so, expect to replace when wear occurs. and dont forget to do the front as well DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

I've squirted motorcycle chain lube into my flanges under the rubber caps. It flows in very easily and then partially solidifies as the solvent evaporates off. Goodness knows if it will prevent the wear, but I'm hoping it might help slow it down a bit.

Again, who knows if it helps, but I use moly grease on my flanges (
 ) as it is supposed to be good for protecting sliding surfaces. At the end of the day, any lubricant is better than leaving it dry. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS |

Another possible source of the clunk you describe is the A frame ball joint.
I've got one piece half shafts on mine but it's recently developed a very similar sounding clunk and that's my prime suspect. If it only occurs when putting the park brake on, I would jack a rear wheel and check for any grabbing on the park brake drum to rule that out (with park brake released.
Apply park brake, the drum should be locked solid. Move the prop to check for any play in the driveline and narrow it down from there. |

I had this on my Tdci. It was the drive flange on the diff.

A-Frame ball joint was replaced at the same time as the axle so I don't think that is the cause. Will check for parking brake grabbing. Thanks to all.
