TD5 oil questions
My local Land Rover specialist sold me Quantum Longlife lll oil for my Defender TD5

This is a fully synthetic 5w/30 oil but the specifications are ACEA C3 and API SN.
When l went to my motor factors to buy a 1 litre top up they looked up my vehicle and said l needed Comma XTech 5w/30

This is again a fully synthetic oil of the correct grade, but the specifications are ACEA A5/B5 and API SL CF

I looked online and these oils are different with regards to additives and something about SAPS which l didn’t understand.

Are both these oils OK for the TD5? There’s about ten versions of 5w/30 oil, each with different characteristics.

Quantum is a brand of VW Audi group. Used to be a Castrol product re-branded but more recently the contract was won by Fuchs.

Land Rover recommend ACEA A1/B1 specification.

Different again to the oils l have been sold.

Will any 5w/30 oil be satisfactory? Some 5w/30 oils are “low ash” for use with engines equipped with DPF such as the TDCi 2.2 but can they be used in the TD5

the oil you have bought are over specd' and thus overpriced !! save money and get the simple stuff.

SAP means low sulfur and phosphorous whixh is irrelevvant for you since its for cars with DPF's. Again you pay a premium for this crap.... Shocked

OK so l don’t need to change the oil again then, l can leave the Quantum in, just buy the cheaper stuff next time.

Although some expert will disagree, id say yes, leave the oil as it is.

In the old days Castrol GTX 20w/50 “liquid engineering” did for every car. If you were really posh you might use Mobil 1 “Rally Formula” but l could never afford it.

Then came Duckhams Hypergrade
“If an engine could choose its own oil, it couldn’t choose a better oil then Duckham’s hypergrade....the engine’s choice”

Those were the days, Castrol or Duckhams. The choice was easy.

I’d say the reason is it’ll work in so many different engines and most they probably see so they buy the one type to save/make more profit. Factors also do very good deals on the quantuam barrels to the trade. I’ve used X-tech for years in my garage and it’s my go to for Td5.

Either that you have are fine and over Spencer for your engine. No need to change it. Cheers
