When my sister and I were still at school we used to go to Glenmore campsite for Christmas and New year every year as a family in our caravan. So many fond memories. Unfortunately it would seem the uplift at the funicular is slow at the moment which makes skiing less appealing than it used to be Sad 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

You could do LEJOG straight into the NC500 and then on to loch Lomond, the route works out pretty well. You can do the Eastern leg of the NC500 to get to John O'Groats then continue the NC500 which leads you nicely towards Loch Lomond Thumbs Up

As for accommodation I too would have a look at Airbnb Thumbs Up

Whats this LEJOG thing I keep seeing??? My wife and I are also planning nc500 next year... Regards

I've done the NC500 and really enjoyed it ,we left Essex and stayed in a pub in Blanchland,a quick detour on the Holy Island from there two nights in Berwick upon Tweed in a hotel ,Berwick was nice with some lovely walks around the old walls and little café's tucked away on cobbled streets.The next stop of note was Inverness where we went on the Black Isle and across on the Nigg Ferry,another great over night stop was Rhiconich in hotel at the end of the lock Inchard our bedroom window looked right down the lock and out to sea what a great view.when we got to Oban we stay in a Castle and had the turret room again looking out across fields to the lock.Now on the way home two nights in Barnard Castle which we always try to visit when up North.We had nice weather very good food stayed in some strange B&Bs lovely small hotels and had a Castle to our selves well felt like it.This was all a few years ago but we are going back next year and taking the Defender.

We're going to do Scotland ( including the NC500 ) this year as we can't get one of our dogs inoculated for rabies, so our trip to Switzeland & Austria has to wait, however given my past experience of Scotland, this isn't too bad!

We leave here on the 17th ( Devon ) and and get into Edinburgh for New Years Eve after travelling up through Loch Lomond and the West coast ( including Skye ), along the top ( staying in Wick ) and down through Cairngorms national park. We're camping in the roof tent and have a small cottage booked through Airbnb in Wick for Christmas eve, day & boxing day.

Price wise it was £45 a night for this place;

Totally away from where you want to be, but gives an idea of price etc.

I'll share any information i find to you when we get back Thumbs Up

Hi Clayton,

Don't be a stranger now, when tackling the NC500, and make sure and ask if you fancy any 'local knowledge'.

Cottages - only stayed in one that I can remember in that area - it was called the East Lodge, just outside Callander, on the south shore of Loch Venachar. It's a dead end, so no through traffic, and a raised deck/balcony oveflooking the loch. Not 100% sure it's still on the market, but I think we found it via 'love to escape' - though I am going back several years now.

Many thanks for the info Donald, they are still going and the wife loves it, so as they can't give me a availability time i have had to email them, we will wait and see Thumbs Up

Sadly the cottage is no longer let out Sad but they have a cabin in the grounds that they let out now, but it's more like a big shed so no go there for us, shame as the cottage was just right Rolling Eyes 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up. Keeper.
