GTL Fuel
Here is one for the very clever people on here, I know bio-diesel is no good for TD5 or Puma as the ethanol eats the rubber seals in the system.
My boss is looking at the new Shell GTL fuels (gas to liquid) that are more environmentally friendly and better for the environment.
On paper in our tier 4 final generators on site 40% reduction of nox less co2 less soot cleaner burning ect.
He is also looking at running the vans on it aswell and selling it as we are being more environmentally friendly than others, basically Shell is saying you can use it in any thing that runs on diesel similar reductions of nox and co2 achievable on eu5 and eu6 vehicles so come on clever people out there do you know anything different before I fill up with the stuff and grind to a spectacular halt in the fast lane somewhere ???? If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

I'm no expert on the GTL Diesel fuel performance, however there are quite a few online articles such as https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...6816301648
Benefits seems to be associated with clean exhaust.

However I do know the GTL Plant in Qatar very well, having worked there on Turnarounds over the last 4 years. One of the largest process plants I have worked on, I was there only 2 weeks ago.

No ethanol in biodiesel. Ethanol is added to gasoline these days. So it won’t destroy our Td5 and Puma engines. Biodiesel are generally vegetable oil based (in Europe mostly rapeseedoil) methyl esters. Not as good as mineral oil based diesel, but not really harmful for modern engines like ours.

no ethanol, but if not properly cleaned following production might well have left of methanol Very Happy

and yes the methanol may well react with 'rubber' fuel lines, seals etc.

I've run my wifes 07 golf largely on bio for the past circa 10 years on varying amounts and although the filler caps says no bio there's been no issues.

You may want to reconsider the bio option. mcdonalds run their trucks on it - 100% I believe? all fuel we buy at the pumps I believe has circa 5% in it. I also understand PSA engines are warrantied to run upto 30% bio. bio is generally ok so long as it's well produced - perhaps have another rethink?

don't know anything about the GTL stuff but my guess is it's more expensive?

Here is the ultimate solution. Simply move to Switzerland. Cool
Biodiesel has never been approved for normal road use here, so all our diesel at the pump remains B0 as opposed to B5, B7 or even B10 in the rest of Europe. Thumbs Up

I'd be interested to know if BP ultimate here has any bio in it or not?

Pretty sure BP Ultimate has biodiesel like anywhere else in Europe except here. When we drive to Belgium I tank BP Ultimate in France and Luxembourg and pretty sure it is labelled as B7 there. There is no B0 anymore anywhere in the EU. Outlawed by Brussels a long time ago.
