40 mph on a country road and "screeeeeeeeeeeeeeee........" as the car decides to lurch hard right. OSR wheel locked solid with no warning. Had it happened a few seconds earlier we would have been a bonnet accessory on a RRS heading the other way.
We'd only been driving perhaps a mile, but the wheel around the hub was warm to the touch, while the brake surfaces were cold. All points to a failed wheel bearing. Not what you expect for 27,000 miles. Off to read my big boys book of wheel bearing changing tips ![]() ![]() 54 Freelander modded for mud 2008 D3 SE 2010 90 XS SW 1978 88 Series 3 undergoing surgery with a new owner 2007 90 County Truck Cab - gone 2006 D3 SE - gone 2004 Freelander Sport - gay 1999 Disco V8 ES rotted to bits |

Nope. Been bog standard from the day we bought her, fresh from the showroom. Only difference is that we're now running 265/75 BFGs which are actually marginally smaller in diameter than the factory 235/85 TRs (a whopping 2mm smaller in fact)
Jacked it up just now and it's got loads of play and is grinding like a barrel-organ monkey on speed. How the hell we haven't heard it is a mystery. ![]() ![]() 54 Freelander modded for mud 2008 D3 SE 2010 90 XS SW 1978 88 Series 3 undergoing surgery with a new owner 2007 90 County Truck Cab - gone 2006 D3 SE - gone 2004 Freelander Sport - gay 1999 Disco V8 ES rotted to bits |

every time I've had a wheel bearing replaced, it's needed a stub axle too, and it's never something that anyone seems to have in stock when I have a problem....

It's nothing new though... when I had my "new" 200Tdi 90 back in 1992, all 4 rear wheel bearings died within a year.
When I stripped them out there was hardly any grease at all in them. A friend in the trade who lives near Solihull and dealt with the factory on a regular basis back then, told me that they only use(d) a teaspoon of grease per corner on axle build up! Probably not much more thesedays either. |
