I'm not particularly fussed as long as it's not continuously in single digits. However I do a fair amount of moderate distance journeys (Surrey to Highlands so about 700 miles) and more curious about how many tanks it would require because stopping every couple of hundred miles would get tedious.

Maybe is the answer... Regardless its a way off yet, need to put aside some funds first.

Basically what happened was I was up in the Highlands in August doing some off roading (the kind where no 4x4 has ever made it to, 6x6 "quad", 8x8 Argocat and 0x0 Chinook yes) and deer stalking. While up there I decided to sell the 3.6TDV8 RR as I wasn't using it much and was pointless keeping it just "losing" money, I don't need two vehicles and living in Surrey don't have a big enough house to just have them sitting around (I have no garage but do have a shed with a collection of tools that would envy most on here).

Anyway on the way south I seemed to attract every muppet on the road. One I almost took out when he, with no warning, pulled out in front of me about 50 yards in front of me when I was doing 50mph on a straight piece of road (he pulled out of the House of Bruar if anyone knows it). Now considering it was around midday on a bright sunny summers day and I was in a 110 towing a green 8 wheel amphibious vehicle I didn't think I was invisible but apparently so. Missed hitting him with the winch bumper by about an inch, not quite locking up the wheels braking but right on the limit. Then got stuck behind him for 50 miles doing about 30 with heavy traffic coming the other way.

Just before this though I'd got stuck behind someone else who was doing about 10mph around the corners but as soon as it opened out putting his foot down and hitting about 70 on the straights. Had I not had 3/4 of a tonne of unbraked Argocat and trailer I might have stood a chance getting past him but it made me wish I had the RR on that particular bit of the journey (it wouldn't have survived the off roading but would have made the road work easier).

Anyway got back home and mentioned to a friend at work I was going to prep the RR for sale. He said he had a friend looking for a 3.6TDV8 and a couple of days later without even cleaning the car it was sold. Easiest sale ever.

Anyway got me thinking about getting a bit more power into the 110. A vapour project I was thinking of was custom ecu and either a 4.2 supercharged JLR engine or 3.6TDV8. Building the custom ECU doesn't really phase me since I've designed way more complicated systems at work, but drivetrain positions were all a bit wrong being independent suspension vehicles. An easier option would be LS3 and has the benefit of having the easy option of a manual (as done by Alex on YouTube with his 90). The rest of the drivetrain has over the last year already been uprated with Ashcroft HD internals as I've had two pegged Ultra Spec lockers built by Nige so minimal work required there.

This time of year I do head up to Scotland a fair bit for weekends stalking and as I tend to drive up overnight it's not the economy so much but hitting the Highlands and being able to fill up before getting to my Nan's. My normal route doesn't have many fuel stops on it, let alone ones open in the early hours. Normally I fill up before setting off, fill up in Carlisle and then I've got about half a tank when I arrive near Invermoriston which usually means I can make it back to Carlisle if I don't use much when there. Late at night the nearest petrol station on route that's open is usually back near Stirling not far off 200 miles away so it'd be a detour to fill up. Hence the curiosity about economy. Not because I don't mind paying for smiles but it's a bit of an inconvenience because of the detours. Ed

I see your point entirely. As a 110 and towing(?) you could possibly have room to store some jerry cans?

I've done the West Coast of the Highlands and know there's few fuel stations about, so it's something I need to factor in, as I'm wanting to go up there next year in the v8.

You could always install the long range fuel tanks too, as you'll be replacing the fuel system anyway.
Then just turn your Nan's property into a fuel dump...

I fitted a custom tank to mine, it'll hold 120 litres when full (26 gallons or so)
which gives me around 300 miles range, nearly 400 on a steady run. It's painful to fill it up but it does take away a lot of the hassle of having to find a fuel station every 100 miles. http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/

This is one of the reasons I went for a 110 rather than a 90 - fuel tank capacity. I bought a long range main tank from Brendan which should give me in the region of 120 litres - which I hope to see me through 300 miles between fill ups.

Now all I have to do is manage to get the thing built before petrol is banned altogether... 2005 Td5 90 XS

Why not a more torquey/powerful diesel instead? BMW M57 or Merc 606 sort of thing?

That way you get the power you want but also keep a useable range.

I think if I can find a "cheap" TDV8 donor that might be the ideal, just need to solve the propshaft alignment issue. My initial thoughts with that one were to keep the transfer box as well since props are easier to have custom made and it would be a smoother box than the LT230. An alternative would be adapter to the LT230.

As I said long way off... Ed

Ed - does the kind of off roading you do in the 110 exclude underslung LPG tanks?

I've got about 90 litres of capacity underneath mine, good for about 230 miles on gas, then however far a tank full of normal petrol would get me (never actually found out!) - so probably somewhere north of 500 miles. Upside of the gas is that it's half the price of petrol so you essentially double your MPG running round.

If underslung tanks are too vulnerable, then if you flat-floored between the wheel boxes you could probably put a couple of donut tanks in there without much loss of usable space..
