200k miles seems to be a reasonable expectation from the original TD5 alternator. The most common failure (in my experience anyway) with these seems to be that oil eventually leaks from the vacuum pump into the alternator and turns the slip ring area into a gooey mess. Spares seem to be hard to come by - I have two alternators which should be rebuildable but I cannot find anywhere that will supply replacement slip rings - anyone know of a source of these?

I sometimes think that fitting an electric vacuum pump and ditching the alternator pump would be a good move, but a decent electric pump is about the same cost as a new Denso alternator and with a life expectancy of c. 200k miles it really doesn't seem worth the hassle.

I thought 200k was good going. I did find the vac pipe had no clip to secure the pipe to the alternator and the oil drain pipe, the clip was not tight.

I have found spare regulators for the Denso, but not looked for the slip rings.
The old one is going to a auto electric place for their thoughts. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Old alternator dropped off to get checked. Nearly 100 miles since swapping out the atly, so looking good.

Cheers for the advice peeps 1999 Defender TD5 110

Probably worn brushes, I have that more often but that might have to do something with my driving behavior.
I have a second alternator so I can swap when needed.

The Altenator is placed low so gets wet when doing this. Roel
