Dashboard lights 300TDI hard top
Morning all,

The dashboard lights on Grover have always been dim and I am sure half of the speedo light bulbs are not working (i believe they have two bulbs for the speedo). Anyway I know it's probably been covered before but I am confused as to which LED upgrade bulbs to buy. Currently looking on the www.Fourby.co.uk website and they list led replacements for a 300tdi, but then go on to state that if you have an analogue time clock, then look elsewhere on the site for that bulb. There is a TD5 LED kit that includes the one for the clock. Grover is a June 1998 Hard top (would this be at the time they were changing over to the TD5) and as with other things I have had to change/replace, I have found some are TDI parts and others TD5.
Also I've watched a U tube clip on how easy it is to change out these bulbs but is it really that easy??!. Any special tools required?.

Any advise/ help, other sites I sohould have a look at greatly appreciated,

Kind regards to all, have a great weekend-weather permitting!!,

Simon.

I have 300 Tdi (‘96), with analogue clock, and I used this set from Fourby: http://fourby.co.uk/epages/950004277.sf/en...cts/DEF005
It is an easy job, only problem I encountered was the bulb holders in the speedo were molten or broken, so I had to improvise holding the speedo bulbs fixed. Cheers, Vincent

I find that it can be a fiddly job for nimble fingers, as you take the binnacle off push the speedo cable from inside the engine bay taking up the slack and this will give you a bit more room to work with. I understood that the clock was sealed so that it was not possible to replace the bulb? but this would not make sense really, so I have blue LEDs in all but the clock which is green Sad

It is a 96 300 Tdi Jeff

Cheers guy's. Will get a set and give it a go.

VeeTee- On the fourby.co.uk/epages/950004277.sf/en...cts/DEF005 page I read the reviews and one said that none of the
bulbs fitted the fuel guage, did you experience this problem?. Is that the small bulb or one of the other larger ones?.

jeffersj- I note your comments ref the clock being a sealed unit. I'll have to wait and see.

Kind regards, Simon Thumbs Up

The small one is for the clock. The larger ones go into the speedo (two) and one each into the fuel gauge and temperature gauge. Cheers, Vincent

Thanks Guy's, pm'd Grafty 99 for further info and many thanks to Procta too.

Bought a set of LED bulbs from fourby.co.uk (£5.99 + p&p) and swapped them over. Pictures below of the before and after . I will have to wait till dark to get the full effect. I took off the steering wheel and un clipped the speedo cable to gain more room for my sausage fingers. What a difference Very Happy .

Morning jeffersj,

I pulled the bulb holder for the clock out of the hole it was in, at the back of the clock. This is brass coloured. The bulb appeared stuck in there. I then noticed that the outer brass coloured sleeve moved upwards/ backwards and forwards which released the little bulb. The bulb had a little green coloured plastic cover/ sleeve on it. I gently pried this off and put the green sleeve on the LED bulb and secured it a tiny dab of superglue. You have to have the brass outer sleeve pulled up to replace the bulb and then release the holder and the bulb is then held in. Fiddly but do able.
When I was replacing the bulbs- one by one- I checked each on to ensure they were in the right way around (polarity) and working, by putting the lights on each time . When it came to the clock I could only get it to come on once it was pushed back into the clock back. It must be earthed in the back of the clock.
Any other problems let me know.
I went out last night and can't believe how bright the dashboard is now. Not Euro box bright but miles better. Also noticed that the bank of dash warning lights are now brighter. They must have more power going to them due to the LED's drawing less power to them??

Morning all,
Feeling brave now!!. Looking to replace the dashboard binnacle and holder. Rapture Engineering do a nice one, metal so bits shouldn't break off. I like the look of the one with the silver coloured inlay. I was also looking to upgrade with a TD5 binnacle so that the heater controls are also illuminated ( thanks for the info Grafty), having the extra wiring spliced in. I'll need to investigate the part numbers etc for the extra wiring/holders and LED bulbs.
Anyone used one of these binnacles of have any ideas??,
Cheers Chaps,

I know this is a bit of a thread resurrection however my led bulb replacement that I did a couple of years ago are starting to fail.

I was wondering if anyone has used these on a 300tdi or will they even work?

https://www.classiccarleds.co.uk/collectio...-sidelight

I was thinking of getting them for the speedo, fuel and temp gauge only as the clock is bright enough.

Thanks
