I thought more basic versions were available? At least fairly recently if not now? MB would be very clever to offer such a vehicle in the UK/Europe as a Defender replacement. I could see a G specced up for utilities work, and they are used in many European armies.

The old G was available in Australia as a ute. Not cheap but the right idea. No idea if there’ll be a ute of the new model. The U.K. is going to get a diesel but it will still be a luxury machine.

The military Gs used abroad will be the the lure Steyr utility vehicles that I don’t believe were/are in general sale.

It is also available as a wagon in Australia: https://www.mercedes-benz.com.au/passenger...odule.html

At 62000GBP or thereabouts is a bit of a bargain. I haven't managed to view a wagon yet as they all seem to be over east! 1955 Series 1 107" Pick up.
1977 RRC Suffix 'D'.
2000 Defender 110 TD5 Xtreme.
2015 Defender Heritage 90.

If the G-Class Pro was available in the UK, I'd have one in a heartbeat.

I just had to take my S350 into the Mercedes Ipswich today because it had a check-engine light for a fault NOx sensor. It's out of factory warranty cover but I bought their extended warranty just in case. I expected to pay the warranty excess, but they just handed the key back to me with no charge.

The service guy said that he was confident that Mercedes would pick up the (£600) bill and there was no need to use the warranty.

Contrast this with the LR dealer who CBA to get up from his chair to look at the (lack of) paint on my Defender and the inevitable arguments about whether or not they are going to fix it under the factory warranty.

All very well but they have done it at a price, £143k! I'm still hoping the new Defender is NOT going to be in this price bracket. Shocked

bluest et al,
dont know about current production but the "original" g wagon was made by Puch in Austria with a licensed MB engine/drivetrain.
that was and still is a direct competitor to our rovers. it aint made for highway use, my old mb gwagen (84) had a 4.56 rear end. i think when they started putting the v8 into them they went astray and lost their bearings with it.

I don't think those basic utility Gs have been available in the UK for a long time, if at all though. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

What was so difficult at JLR that they couldn't have created a successor to our beloved Defenders the way Merc have with the G Wagen? You'll never confuse it for anything else yet it is entirely new and meets all Euro criteria. Well done Merc Thumbs Up

The final paragraph in the article is telling: "It should cause some red faces at Land Rover, too. While JLR flounders over the Defender’s replacement, the latest G-class demonstrates that it’s entirely possible to mix the ability and character of an age-old model with the performance and technology required of new cars."

Ah! So you’ve already seen the new Defender!?!? Do tell!
