200tdi Discovery or Sherpa 2.5 Diesel
I got my Defender through a friend who put a replacement engine in it before purchase.

I am in the process of replacing the timing belt. When speaking to him he told me that the engine is off a Sherpa Rover Diesel engine.

My engine is exactly the same as the below taken off a Discovery 200tdi site

Do not sure where to go with timing, also I have purchased a Discovery 200tdi timing kit but he mentioned the teeth count on the Sherpa is different. Going to ask him to pop around and have a look for me but thought I would consult Defender2. Net

Sorry need to add, I have purchased a Discovery 200tdi timing belt kit not a Sherpa kit.

Plus in the past have always bought using reference Discovery 200tdi engine (water pump, starter etc).

Good to go for change but now in doubt what I got Big Cry 1990 200tdi conversion 90

Was the Sherpa Diesel engine turbocharged? I thought they were N/A

Got turbo on mine, I trust my mate but I think he must be confused. Certain it's a Discovery 1, not well up on Sherpa engines tbh 1990 200tdi conversion 90

I always thought the Sherpa's ran Transit smiley front type engine's was it a 2.5 di we used to call it a bunch of banana's engine because of the manifold and I don't think they had a turbo Fitted ,it was a long time ago Very Happy

That is a Discovery 200 TDi you have there.

The 14j (sherpa) is the Leyland version of the Land Rover 12j which is a normally aspirated engine.
The difference being the 12j has the fuel injection pump fitted low and the 14j has a the FIP fitted high up.

So I was totally wrong about the Transit engine Big Cry





Just got on the phone to mate of mine and it was the Leyland DAF 400 Vans that had the Transit engine fitted plus gear box and all the front running gear ,rear axle was also Transit .
