Yes.

I'm guessing from the Rolling Eyes you don't agree? The reason I think that it's unexcusable is that it puts people against those of us that follow the rules and make it the argument for banning 4x4s from any tracks much easier. There's enough anti 4x4 sentiment out there even if you follow the rules.

Are the rules too tight in places? Yes. Have lanes been closed that shouldn't have been? Yes.

Cambridgeshire has a system that in principle I think is good, and that is that many lanes get winter closures. This means that they don't get destroyed when they're waterlogged. The problem is that many don't get re-opened again for summer, I was out on Sunday and Monday and around half the potentially locked lanes still were. Whether this is landowners locking the lanes themselves or the council being lazy I'm not sure.

Here in the Alps it is tightly regulated and (fortunately) backed up by heavy snow making many of the trails and passes unusable for 6 months of the year. When they are passable, normally from May through Oct, it's free use during May, June, Sept and Oct, but limited use in peak walking/holiday months, when access is limited to before 0800 and after 1800. If you fall foul of the local police, who do pop up occasionally in their 4x4s or trail bikes, you will be fined on-the-spot. But with six months off, the trails are OK. It's regulated more for noise and danger as there are (as always) idiots out there.

In the UK I've always wondered why like hunting and fishing, there isn't a green-laning season and access requires a licence. Controlled seasons for maintenance and repair (no reason why some low-use areas couldn't be open 365), controlled access with a licence aimed at more law-abiding and considerate 4x4 owners, revenue from the licence to maintain the trails and boost policing of them, and finally legitimately stiffer fines for those who flout the rules, the months of use and don't have a licence. Win, win. Monsieur Le Grenadier

It's because green lanes are public roads that are subject to all of the rules and regulations that implies. Changing their status in the way that you describe would be a major legal exercise for which there's no appetite. In the grand scheme of things, it's just not important enough. Darren

Why on earth would you join GLASS ? It's not like they've ever achieved anything, if you want to give money to an organisation with a proven track record of fighting actively for motorised vehicle access, TRF are a MUCH better bet and far more effective and better organised. If you think having a "GLASS" sticker on the side of your vehicle is somehow helping to keep lanes open you're kidding yourself. http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/

I would agree TRF is more active so to speak but I would hazard a guess there are more bikers that Greenlane per head than us. They also have the advantage of sone legal byways that are narrower.
I considered joining GLASS at one time but didn’t as I saw little point. I do think however, that it’s vital that people spend time to read up and understand the laws applicable and what routes are acceptable. If ever challenged which thankfully is rare I like to know that I have a legal right to transverse the area and the accuser doesn’t have a leg to stand on.
As I said, you’d be surprised how many people who don’t know what an OS map is. Or the difference between a footpath, brideleway, byway etc etc. To many a lane is simply a lane, and if it’s not a got locked gate or obstructed they go for it. It’s extremely rare anything would be done about it either. And as mentioned, those of us who use things responsibly suffer the consequence. As it is we’ve lost most of the lanes, and just leads to a lower quality of life for all of us.

The guy was caught , found guilty and fined . Leave him alone now . Why make calls for an even stiffer fine ? Get a grip man - Theres too many curtain twitchers with a holier than thou attitude passing comment on these kinda of threads . Lets put it into context - the guy took a 4x4 up a track - big deal - He's not a gypsy breaking into houses or stealing Landrover Defenders , he's no went out and interfered with a gang of schoolkids or sold some smack around his housing estate has he ? There are worse folk out there getting off with alot worse crimes and being fined nothing . Try and not get too excited cos a guy took a 4x4 up a dirt track - big deal .
