Afraid these are not road legal. DOT SAE marking plus the E3 marking on one and the same headlight just cannot be.
DOT compliant lights are for USA, and those lights require a totally different light pattern than the UN ECE requirements. So it is either or but not both on the same headlight. Just a little warning that these here seem for offroad use only. Eric You never actually own a Defender. No, but agree that Brendan knows that stuff like no one else. I’m just pointing this out to people who may not be aware of this. Better safe than sorry.

Thanks for your post, however these were fitted when my Defender was 2 years old by the Land Rover dealership I purchsded my Defender from new, and it just passed its first MOT with these lights and so they are clearly for road use, MOT standard and perfectly legal or the vehicle would not have passed the MOT. I have also checked with a local garage this afternoon and they have said the same. 2015 Defender 110 XS Utility Santorini Black, sawtooth alloys, steps and so much more...........

Well, I took another look at the pictures where your lights are showing the entire surface of the lens. Apart from the fact that DOT plus E3 marking are a mismatch together on a light, any light with a real European approval will have more approval related coding on its lens. See none of that here, so afraid I stick to my earlier statement.

Perhaps Eric it would have been more gentlemanly to point this out in a pm to the vendor, rather than messing up his for sale ad..

I am sorry Ayrshirelandy, I did not want to post on your sales thread but those lights are most definitely not road legal.
The fact that your vehicle has passed an MOT does not make them road legal. All the MOT does is a basic safety check on the workings and aim of headlights. I would suggest you speak to knowledgeable vehicle lighting persons.. What is the legal situation? UK Vehicle Lighting Regulations states that vehicles from 1986 headlights must have an approval mark. The Designation of Approval Marks Act states an acceptable approval mark for headlights is as described by the UNECE regulations The Road Traffic Act section 76(?) states it is an offence to supply fit or use a defective item on a vehicle. Non approved item would IMO include a non approved item. A valid approval mark consists of several parts. Country code which is an E + number in a circle The regulation or amendment number The actual approval number 4-6 digits Light Function Code HCR for main/dipped beam and RL for a DRL PL for plastic lens Peak Beam Reference Number something like 12.5/17.5/25 An arrow for left hand traffic . (British/American light pattern might not require the arrow) NOT a legal requirement but most reputable manufacturers put their brand name on. Since that information does not appear on your lights they are not approved and hence not road legal Approval marks are set out in UNECE Regulation 112 section 4 (IIRC) Google it for yourself or read this Other relevant UN regulations are UNECE R48 I would suggest you go back to your dealer and discuss the situation with them. Be warned they will probably fob you off as they will not be aware of the regulations and their legal responsibilities. It is unfortunate but their are a lot of ILLEGAL LED headlights available on sites such as ebay etc Have a look HERE . They look extremely similar to yours with same markings as yours. They are ILLEGAL as they are not approved. It is worse then that they are passing off. Claim to be Truck-Lite 27291C . Truck-Lite do an approved headlight but it is nothing like that. Check by looking at a genuine Truck-Lite 27291C HERE I am sorry but you have been misinformed/duped by the person who supplied those headlights. It is also possible that the person concerned ordering those lights were misinformed/duped about the legality of these lights If you want to check things like approval markings all vehicle glass needs to carry an approval mark. The UNECE regulation for vehicle safety glass is regulation 43. Look at your Defender each glass will have the following markings on Country code E+ number in a circle 43R being the actual regulation 4-6 digit approval number Also manufacturers name. Now walk down the street and look at a BMW/Fiat/Audi/Ford etc a nd they will be of same format with 43R as the regulation Apologies for the long winded post but by giving detailed references you can actually check for yourself what I have stated Brendan |
