130 tipper project...
Long time lurker and having had a “few” Defenders over the years thought i ought to make an effort and log works on the latest unexpected project purchase…might also help me keep track of what i've actually done to it!

This may be a wordy thread as the wife doesn’t talk to me much so you lot will have to do - she also hates me tinkering with land rovers, of which there are now 5 hidden away Smile

This one is a 130 TD5 2002 Tipper bought from the local tree surgeon i know. It’s been well used, well serviced but not very well cleaned, so the second rear cross member is now rotten (also not helped by lack of rear mud guards/arches) and the both front out riggers have completely had it! Hence an MOT failure that wasn’t financially viable for him to get repaired, just to sell it on.

It’s ex utilities SVO i think from SW Water which originally had a big box on it. Came with the in service maintenance records totally £23k in its 109k miles! Now on 158k

It’s just a bit scruffy round all the edges as well as grubby and needs some general TLC all over.
Which is what I rather enjoy and have brought a few scruffy “farm fresh” defenders back to life over the years…
I also have lots of left over parts from those days and this seems a good vehicle to use them on.

Initial photos are post first pressure wash - it was disgusting underneath and i refused to buy it before at least seeing what i was letting myself in for!

Rough plans are to get it MOT’d as soon as possible and then sort a few niggles and upgrades
In no particular order and will most likely grow:-
- get it looking similar to my 110 4.2TD (mainly as i have half a tin of land rover light green paint left!) and i may be able to pretend it’s actually the 110 parked in the drive…
I’m not a sprayer, but have enough kit and want to have a go at a colour change myself - what’s the worst that can happen!
- Series door tops and bottoms - I am not a fan of heavy defender doors.
- new door hinges and door seals
- New DS front wing,
- new light surrounds and grill
- replace dented sill panels
- new screen seal when it’s out for paint
- Welding - obviously! with full dinitrol treatment
- tidy up tipper sides as they’ve all become rattly with use
- Full service of all fluids and filters
- Replace any other usual defender related wear items.
- Clutch - doesn’t slip but it’s high.
- Few engine bits - EGR removal, maybe a dynachip map
- Service the winch and repair rotten sections of bumper (or remove and sell to pay for some more essential parts)
- Full interior out debug - with new seat base retrim on DS.
- fix loose centre console and remove any dead switches etc
- new wheels and tyres - i do have some 285 75 16 on reverse centred disco steels which might work
- new rear lights - maybe NAS lenses
- front mud flaps
- rear wheel arches
- some new brake pipe

Some slightly ambitious and unlikely due to lack of tinker time plans are - to make a demountable camping pod from a quadtech box or similar that can be interchangeable with the tipper back.

Started works on it last week with a quick oil and filters change just because i like to start with fresh oil!
Also spent an afternoon peeling sign writing off...next time i will buy something from a tree surgeons with a shorter company name.

And today got into the welding works:-

With a bit of help from my mate Seb at the farm and the Merlo....

I have left the tipper frame on as a datum to weld the the new rear crossmember to as there is no tub to line it up with.

It's quite crusty - always keep your bottom clean and it won't build up a crusty layer and need surgery...

Cut and out - simple (assuming i've cut it in the right place...)

Noticed it was a bit thin and crusty in the cross piece in front the tank, so cut a section out, welded in 40mm box as a base piece to add strength and then a chunky piece of flat bar to join the old to new. Front face with cradle mounts wasn't too bad and was welded straight to 40mm box

And that's it for todays 5hr stint!
Hopefully get back to it early in the week, cross member ready to go on now.
A few other crusty bits no spotted that i want to cut out and replace.
Inside remaining chassis actually looks pretty good, just usual water/mud trap areas that need some work

You'd think with the beauty of a tipper body the chassis and crossmembers would be easier to keep an eye on and keep clean!

Interesting vehicle - worth saving i'd say.

BTW. I have a good cross member from a 200tdi.

It was replaced about three years ago, I have since replaced the whole chassis but kept the cross member because it is sound.

Let me know if it's any use. 2007 90 Puma - Love it - Best car I have ever owned.

1989 Ninety 200tdi - Love it - Second best car I have ever owned.

1951 80" Series 1 - Love it - Third best car I have ever owned.

Many thanks for the offer - i've got a new 3mm one here ready to fit with extensions - I am sure it would sell quite easily if priced well and it's still not far off a new one.

Ditto! I guess getting your staff to clean a truck they don't own after a hard days work is rather tricky! I have pointed out that it's worth giving his vehicles a quick once over at least once a month to save later pricey bills!

Made a bit of progress between child care and bits of work...

New rear cross member is now welded on - it's a 3mm one from Island4x4 - made in UK apparently - seems well made and heavy enough to be a ball ache fitting by myself!

Thought i'd do a full weld across this seem, which from past experience seems to fill with mud and swell with rust...

Used the tipper frame mounting holes on old cross member to get the distance front to back - measuring from a couple of datum points....then propped it out the way to clamp the new cross member in place to get it correct vertically....hopefully?!

The DS spring bracket was a little thin in places, so I cut the sides out with the plasma and welded in some 3mm plate. The top had a hole, so cut that out and welded a complete 3mm "patch" over the top - probably quicker to cut off turret and weld a new one on....but I didn't have one but had plenty of plate!
Also a body mount was a bit crusty, so hacked it off and welded a bit of box on which i cut at an angle.

Cheers - I have to confess, this kind of welding work I normally loath on a defender - but having full access to it with no body is almost a pleasure and speeds up things no end Laughing the enthusiasm is a little more than usual Whistle

Looks like a great project and lots of progress so far. Interesting what you said about the series doors being lighter, is that because they’re aluminium vs steel on the later ones?

I always preferred the look of the series doors with the bit of galvanised capping and recessed handles. I really dislike the later push button handles, id love to have lift up handles but retain electric windows and central locking on my puma.

I just like series doors for their simplicity, which makes them lighter and they make the cab that little bit roomier inside.
Just to confuse matters, my old 110 has the crossover doors - i.e. early 90/110/127 doors. But they are incredibly hard to find, hence me ordering new series doors for this 130...

I think ou'd have to get the late 80s doors to get one piece and lift up handles?
SP make them new - just need to check what internals can be fitted to allow for electric window and locking...

Bit of progress on this...
Ordered more bits Whistle

Spent some time on the tipper frame - a lot more time than expected!
But it had quite a few cracks in it from 8/9 years use, so I decided to add some reinforcing plates in various places.

The Hydraulic setup was badly mounted and over time has caused this:-

Using about 2m of 100mm x 6mm flat it looks like this...

I still need to weld the revised wheel arch brackets back on, so some paint will need to come off again....but sometimes you just need to stick some paint on things to boost moral!
