World market potential for a real 4x4
The old Defender sold around 25,000 in a very good year during it's life, but mostly less than that.
If anyone doubts that there's still a market today for an off-road orientated, beam axle 4x4, here's a sobering thought.

Jeep have just sold 28,000 Wranglers in one MONTH!
What makes that more impressive, is the new JL was only available in the US and Canada during that period as the 4 door version. The new 2door, diesel, export and pickup models are not yet available.
Demand is there for a vehicle at the right price.

As for working trucks, FCA sold even more Dodge Rams in March, 41,307.

How Jeep manage to do that number is unbelievable as the dealers are terrible .I know I bought one Big Cry PS the Jeep Grand Cherokee is great just the dealers that let it down.

I had a Wrangler for a while and absolutely loved it...JLR couldn't give a stuff about that market any longer & those who think that they will ever put the Defender as central to their heritage and conquer that world market again are deluded...it's gone, it was fun whilst it lasted, but its definitely over! Since 1973...S1, Air Portable's, Defender's, but only my Wolf TUL HS GS remains

Jeeps also sell at ridiculously high prices with little to no incentives. They are extremely profitable. I find it hard to justify the money on a new Wrangler. Iā€™ve owned two Wranglers in the early 90s but they were both used. But Wranglers have been over priced for years and a lot of people pay it. I looked at a JL Rubicon a week ago. Nice enough ride but not nearly worth $56k USD. Besides, I want something I wonā€™t see 4 of at every stop light. Thereā€™s many, many more like me. The new Defender should do very well in the US. With the Defender and Bronco coming, Wranglers salad days are fixin to take a hit. Theyā€™ll still rule the roost but competition is a good thing.

If land rover sold a defender in the US and maintained its classic utilitarian looks, kept the solid axles and did a good job on the interior, I would probably sell my wrangler and get one if it was under 40k. They would probably sell a lot of them. Jeep wrangler is the only small SuV with solid front and rear axles. I don't even know if many SUV's in the US have full frames anymore. The Toyota FJ is gone as well as the xterra. The new bronco is likely to have IFS.

Pretty sure it will be based on current discover and range rover platform, so aluminium monocoque and no solid axles...

Surely, but that's entirely different from the Brits buying old Land Rovers Rolling with laughter
