4WD to 2WD
greetings from Zambia, I am new to this site and hoping there is a body out there that can advise me on a few problems i'm having with the 2011 defender wagon.
No 4WD!! After some wild riding on safari through massive puddles and rough roads that resulted in the loss of the rear disc covers and a few other parts not high enough off the turf.
The big problem is I only have front wheel drive. There is some clunking when pulling in low speed. I looked at the front transfer box but nothing obvious although a little paste and a few tiny shards of metal that were a bit disturbing.
In know this is all very general but has anyone had a similar experience and can point me to the most likely cause?

Also on a different topic altogether; i have lost the fan and air con. Strangely the fan will come on but not with the engine running, cant find a blown fuse? Did plug in a small fridge to the cigar lighter AND possibly that caused troubles? It stopped working also.
Again, i appreciate any and all advise you may contribute. its not so easy to find a clever mechanic way out here so most things have to be done with available resources.
Cheers,
John

Are you driving round in diff lock? If so it will either be your diff or half shaft gone

Could be as simple as a drive flange.

Jack up a rear wheel, stick it in difflock, if it spins full circle its broken. If it locks that side is ok, check the other.

getting more confused;
originally heard some clunking in low speed under load,
then had only drivers side front spinning in the mud, no 4wd.
jacked up 2 back wheels and found power to rear only.
jacked up all 4 and have power from transfer box to all 4.
No damage to shafts.
some slop in front between drive flange and wheels
a little residue on sump magnet-- transfer box
removed inspection plate for t box and gears good lock diff shift good
box, HRC 2815 1
anyone had similar scenario?
Is there a big change under load, and I'm seeing different results because its jacked up?
Thx for any help!

Is your diff lock engaging properly?

All of the behaviours above may happen if the centre diff is unlocked.

you may see different response with it jacked up.

As blackwolf said with what you have described above that is all normal with the centre diff unlocked.

if you tried the same (dont!) with the middle diff locked when you jacked up the rear only it would drive off the axle stands as front axle would (or should!) be receiving drive.

sonds to me like your centre diff lock is not engaging.

Do the test as suggested above, lock the centre diff, jack up one wheel at a time, it shouldnt turn far before locking up.

not teaching to suck eggs but you are aware with out the middle diff locked only one wheel is guaranteed to turn?

with diff lock in one wheel on each axle is guaranteed to turn.

This is excluding any action from ETC. Cheers
