Netherlands 2003 Defender 90 Td5 PU Caledonian Blue
A very long time ago I rebuild a 90 to a v8. I ran it on lpg so about the same running cost as a diesel in that time and with the benifit that an lpg power car doesn't stall under strange angles I was very happy with it.

United Kingdom 1987 Defender 110 V8 Petrol CSW Corris Grey
My 3.5 V8 on Su carbs returns about 15mpg and has a reading of 135 bhp on a rolling road when the carbs were balanced. So poor economy and low power but I only do 3000-4000 miles a year so not a problem for me.

I think when there are more low emission zones ( Southampton soon ) anything other than Euro 6 compliant will be penalised ( diesel or petrol ) so switching to an old petrol engine at great expense probably wont be beneficial.

I would imagine for your miles if you go petrol an lpg conversion will be a no brainer and you will recoup the cost in a short time. HR064 Hampshire and Berkshire 4x4 Response

The Toyota 4.7 V8.
Had two, best on petrol was 16mpg for one 18mpg for other.
A bit less on LPG.

Agreed the Landcruiser is heavier than a Defender, but 25 mpg and more is not going to be achievable.
Bloody great engine and makes a nice noise.

I don't use it every day, but my 110 is a 3.5 v8 auto, megasquirted and on LPG (twin 45L tanks under the sills).

My commute is approx 50 miles each way, and it will happily sit at 70mph on the motorway all the way there and back. The engine is a LOT quieter than a diesel - it's still noisy on the motorway but it's mainly wind noise, tyre noise (BFG MTs) and my noisy transfer box!

I get about 12mpg on LPG, but it's an old fashioned single point system (BLOS gas carb). A fill up is about 240 miles worth, and LPG is between 55 and 70p a litre depending on where you get it..

My 3.5 is probably a bit past it and underpowered, I've got a newly built 4.6 to go in probably this summer, along with proper multipoint gas injection which should perk things up a bit...

Was that the 1UZ or 3UZ? 18mpg isnt too bad for a chunky V8. LPG was what 15 - 16? Equally not too bad. Well terrible compared to modern V8s Laughing

Thought it was a 2uz, but last one went on it’s way 2013 ish. So cannot recall.

On LPG around 13 or 14mpg.

Very reliable engine, idiots on end of the gas conversion ruining the good ability!

Although when going good did my towing for work for three years at that point doing 35,000 miles per annum.

I’ve had a couple of classic RR Overfinches running the Chevy 5.0 with TBI on them.

They made my 3.9 seem economical but great engines with absolutely minimal electrics
