That excessive weight is just one of the reasons they won't vibrate to pieces and don't have play in the quill!

It's a total mine field far as new stuff is concerned. It's almost all made in China, but that's not to say it's all bad, it just hard to tell because it all looks the same. I have Chinese generic mill/drill which has proved pretty good. It put a 25mm hole in a tractor draw bar with a blacksmiths bit in the chuck.
Do you have a branch of Axminster tools near you? Their Jet branded models ok, and you might be able to go in the store and yank on the quill and give it a once over. The other thing is the quality of the sharpening and the geometry of the bit. A lot of stuff is not good quality and makes it hard work for your machine. You can learn how to do it, or cheat like me and give it to retired toolmaker (Dad) to sharpen! 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS |

The other problem with smaller drills in my experience is you can't slow them down enough for a big hole. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Meddings - British and the best. The heavier the better.

I'm watching a Meddings atm near me but while I appreciate the quality I'm a little scared of that bulk in my little shed.....and also the asking price of £200.
I suppose it will hold its value, and even the rubbish Ive got now seems to be selling for good money on ebay. |
