V8 Camshaft?
After playing around with the V8 I've just dropped in the series 3, I'm starting to think while I'm at it why not replace the cam shaft?

I've not looked at it, as it seemed to run quite sweet,
But now it has an exhaust, and everything fitted, I can't stop it spitting through one carb.

I'm 90% confident that it's a worn cam lobe,
I will check this with a dial gauge in the week.

Question is, if I end up replacing it with a kit,
Which one to go for?

I see Rimmers do a standard 3.5 kit for around £130 which includes lifters etc,
Or is it worth spending more on a performance cam,
or would that extra bit of power be wasted in a series??

An early mod I did on the 3.5 I had in my first Tomcat was to put a 3.9 efi cam shaft in it along with a proper timing chain and gear set (from RPI at the time) dont worry about using the alternative cam timing key ways - not really necessary for Day to day stuff. Before you rip it to bits have you advanced the distributor as far as you can get away with? The official timing is very pessimistic! You will be amazed how knackered a V8 has to be before it really gives up the ghost 😉 MY15.5 110XS CSW

Just rebuilt my 3.5 V8 with standard cam etc from Kent. I didn't feel the need to do any performance mods, its quite perky enough for me in standard tune.

have you tried a compression tester a worn cam might show up doing that, but yes a DTI should show it up DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

Having had a 3.5 running a knackered standard cam and 3.9 efi cam, surprisingly the new cam gave a useful improvement. My current engine runs a Kent H180 cam and that makes a noticeable difference. Not immediately apparent until you come to a hill and find you don't need to change down a gear, or two, like I did previously with a standard cam in good condition.
As previously mentioned a V8 can hide the fact that it is basically FUBAR quite well.
With the V8 it is not ultimate power you are chasing but torque, lots of luvverly torque, ideally below 3000 rev/min

This is a SD1 1987 vintage, brought with no history, only that it had been removed for a TDI swap in another series LR,
By the looks of it, it had been stood on a garage floor for quite a few years?
There really is no way of telling how many miles it's done!

It runs and starts well, hot or cold, but it doesn't like going over 2.5/3000 rpm
I will check the timing this week, and replace the distributor cap, as it looks quite old
I've done plugs and leads,

I don't really want to pull it out and strip it, as it runs so well,
But I'm beginning to wonder if it's as good as I first thought?

If it needs a rebuild, I would rather change it for a decent 3.9.

I will investigate further in the week. Rolling Eyes 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"
