Best tyre for actual snow?
So what's the verdict? Ignoring chains and just plain icy conditions. What's the best snow tyre you can put on a truck ? I would think an MT would be good in the same way that it works in mud, however the U.K. Usually has some slippery ice under the snow.. so perhaps a less aggressive, but winter rated AT pattern(with sipes?) is actually better despite not having the lugs to really grab chunks of the white stuff... 2014 Keswick Utility 2.2

Best best will be something with studs. Best and UK road legal is going to be a Nokian Hakkepellita (or however it's spelt!!)

A proper snow tyre has more silicates in the rubber to keep it soft at lower temperatures, and more siping to clear standing water. An AT is good, but not as good as a winter.

In terms of markings, M+S rating is pretty good, but more of an all season, a proper winter tyre has the TPMSF (Three peak mountain snowflake or something) symbol on it.

I'm aware of the mountain/snowflake winter specification- it just feels like at some point shouldn't an AT (no matter how good a compound or how many sipes etc) become packed with snow and ineffective? Perhaps they're able to shed snow fast enough unlike mud... 2014 Keswick Utility 2.2

I once was lucky enough to follow a car on a snow covered road which had winter tires, but which after a a flat tire had to replace one of its rear wheels by the full size spare with a very good summer tire on. So one side a winter tire, the other a almost new summer tire. That was a real eye opener, confirms the value of real winter tires. The view on the winter tire remained completely black, it dispelled of all the snow from its sipes easily with every turn, ready to bite into the white stuff which each next turn of the wheel. In contrast, the summer tire looked entirely white, snow just sticking on to it.
Nokian Hakkapeliitta LT2 in 235/85-16 size is most likely the best choice you can make for a Defender. Good reason that here in Switzerland these Nokians on genuine HD Wolf wheels were an official Land Rover accessory as long as the Defender was for sale. Finished now.
My Nokians LT (so the first version) are 8 years old now, never missed a beat, still have 10 mm profile. Most likely will replace them in the fall of 2018 by a new set of LT2's as next winter onward we will be spending much more time driving in the snow and in real winter conditions than we do nowadays. Occasionally may even need chains, have those ready too.

KM2 as I have no excellent for all things inc soft snow, but big failiures on ice which of course is not their designated purpose anyway.

Overall I'd still stick with KM2, but for the exact purpose you mention KO2 Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧

In the 8" deeper in some parts of snow parts of hereford has had today, i can say my 275 70 18 cooper discoverer st maxx were great in fresh snow, but not as good as my old 235 85 16 cooper discoverer stt's.

Tonight on a side road i struggled to get grip with the diff lock in, front atb and rear locker at times, mainly due to it been so icey and trying to go in ruts which were at least 12" deep.

I feel on standard size wheels i could of made by far better progress. But on the up side they are studdable if it gets worse 2004 TD5 Defender 90 xs station wagon

It's as much the driving technique as the tyre tread on snow.
