United Kingdom 1986 Defender 90 Other ST Nato Green
Coming back early next year rescue response vehicle
Hi all

Been away for a while sold my 07 puma a few years back one of the first ones had
Lots of issues

Been in a Hilux and a shogun van for the company use

Still have a 1985 ex Raf 90 soft top

Looking early next year to get a later defender what are they like did all the problems
Get sorted

What’s the 2.2 engine is it better than the 2.4 I had

I had clutch gearbox and fuel issues

Would be 2013 forward model 110 station wagon

Is it best to get a base spec one to avoid all the abs traction control my xs had that fitted

Looking at ex raf. Base spec ones

Want to use it for a rescue response vehicle so need to be reliable
And not very much mileage each year

Thanks dan

It's basically the same engine, same sort of perfomance and economy. Marginally smoother. They only changed it for emissions reasons.

The Clutch has been revised several times, but it's the same clutch as the 2.4, the gearbox is also the same as the 2.4 but you can get the adaptor shaft modification from Ashcroft.

Nothing really wrong with ABS or Traction control, ABS makes it safer on the road and traction control helps out off road. TC isn't as good as limited slip diffs or locking diffs but it's better than just ordinary open diffs. Obviously the less it has on it the less there is to go wrong, but the TC and ABS are fairly reliable in service.

XS's do come with air con, which is nice in summer.

All of the ex-RAF ones I have seen in my hunt were without A/C, so you may be out of luck there.

M '07 2.4 is base spec but with A/C but they seem few and far between. To echo ZSD-PUMA, it makes summer much more pleasant and also helps to keep it dry inside during the damp winter. For me it was an essential.

I also haven't heard of many ABS/TC-equipped Defenders giving masses of trouble.
