Radios don't make any noise

The original radio in my One_Ten was from a P38 're and gave faithful service for years before it died. Tried replacing it with a standard Defender radio. Everything worked apart from the minor detail that it didn't produce any sound. Tested all the speakers and found no fault. The radio was a freebie so thought maybe it was just a duff unit. Replaced it with a radio from a freelancer and have exactly the same problem. Everything works but I cannot get any sound from it on either radio or cassette.
Any thoughts oh knowledgeable chaps, please?

how did you test / confirm speakers are ok?

Yes it is equipped with a mute button and I have tried that, thank you.

Tested the speakers with an AA battery, if you connect one of the speaker wires to the -ve terminal and the other to the +ve the speaker will make a noise. Thus proving the speakers and the wiring.
