2010 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 HT Stornoway Grey
Iceland
My ship is crossing to the states via Iceland next week; we have 2 days in Reykjavik and 2 days in Akureyri,

Anybody got any ideas on things to do not too far away from the town? i've been twice before on two different ships but normally just stayed in the town and had a beverage in the evening...

I have to stand a watch but can arrange some extra hours off, can't be gone for too long.


This time we are thinking about the blue lagoon and hiring a car; any other ideas on where to visit? like i say its only a quick 48 hour stay on the way to the states.

Also any tips on renting a car? doesn't have to be anything fancy / 4x4 unless someone has some ideas?

look up Sad Cars who are based out at the airport and hire out ‘non-perfect’ vehicles at a cut down rate.
We rented a Yaris and drove to most of the sights on the south and south west of the country and loved it.
Easy to do and worth it !

We were there a month ago - While at Akureyri we went whale watching - they have a 100% success rate for finding the whales that live in the Fjord - we saw a pod of about 8 humpbacks
Reykjarvik - we avoided it as much as possible - but there is the Golden Circle of - Blue Lagoon, Geysir, Gullfoss Waterfall. and where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet in Þingvellir National Park.

A lot of people were hiring Dacia Dusters 4x4 and driving through the 4x4 only roads and rivers

I did this a few years ago - hired a Ford 4x4 (one we don't see in UK - looked like a Honda CRV)
