England 2010 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 USW Stornoway Grey
Really stumped!!
So, here's the scenario so far:

My 110 went in to the dealers a month or so ago. MiL light had been on (reset by me), and screeching on moving away.

Also car felt down on power.

Told that there was a PCM fault showing, so they replaced the ECU. Also changed the clutch, which had failed. Clutch change seemed to cure the screeching sound, anyway.

Not much improvemnt (if any) from changing the ECU.

Car's perfoormance is very erratic - very occasionally, it feels fine, and as smooth as other Puma Defenders I've driven. On most other occasions (majority of time), it's dog rough, idles and drives very roughly (gritty feeling from engine). Not much power, either, and struggles to rev above 3000rpm.

Went in to dealers again, as it was getting worse. Dealers call me to say that they've found a PCM fault and need to swap the ECU - 'Er, but you did that four weeks ago'. 'Oh, did we? Oops, then well get back to you'.

Picked it up yesterday morning. Seems they have now fitted the turbo wiring loom modification, but no improvement. In fact, on driving it away, it felt even more rough!

Then after work, I was driving it home (30 miles or so). Near my home is a very steep hill (Fish Hill, for those of you who know the A44). About half way up the hill, it's as if I suddenly get another half a cylinder. Engine smoothes out, I get more power. It stays like this until I get home.

Start car this morning, and on drive to work, it still feels smoother - Like it did when I first got it. But, later today, on way home, it's already starting to feel a bit rougher again.

Dealer sent my fault code and diagnostic info to LR, and are awaiting reply. The fault code that keeps coming back ,no matter what, is 0606-49.

Any ideas where to start looking/directing the dealer? Turbo? Injectors? Fuel pump?

Car has now been into dealers three times in 3 months. I fear if I don't get this sorted soon, it may be my last Defender. Certainly for a while. It's doing my head in, as I don't enjoy driving it any more.... Crying or Very sad

Could be fuel. Try running some bp ultimate thru it. Also change the fuel filter, you may just have had some dirty fuel.

The roughness of my Defender J-Lo gets sorted with an injector re-learn, however it returns within a few hundred miles.
Changed dealers now and its booked in next week.

Contact Land Rover Customer Care and express your disappointment they will kick ass to get it sorted Thumbs Up 130's have feeling's as well you know Smile

Cheers, guys.

Will mention the injector re-learn to the dealer. Weird thing is the way that the engine suddenly 'cleared' itself then went back to being 'rough' within 30 miles driving.

My instinct would have been fuel-related too. Which is why when the 110 was in with the dealers this last time, I asked them to change the fuel filter (even though not part of the 12k service). And I'd put a tank of ultimate through as well!

Am going to bung a bottle of Forté through as well. Grasping at straws!

When mine has run like a bag of spanners it was the fuel pressure sensor/valve in the end of the commonrail and when its been badly down on power the variable vains on the turbo had siezed up If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

Cheers for this - I had been looking on a BBS for owners of Mk 7 Transits (as you do) and the fuel pressor sensor seemed to come up quite a lot.

Incidentally, I have noticed a small amount of weeping (just a dark oily 'smear') on the fuel rail where the middle pipe (high pressure in?) joins it. Could this be enough to cause any poor running?
