Oil leak at rear of transfer case
All,

Is any of you had any problem with oil leak from the rear of the transfer case on a 2008 model 130 defender? Two month ago i got a leak at the rear (side of read prop shaft). The dealer replace the oil seal and washer as they were worn out (after 14145 km). Yesterday after a 4 weeks trip overseas, i came back home and discover that after the first drive, the leak start again (i got now 15448 km). I suspect the hand break when engage to de-axis the rear prop shaft and mark the seal. which then leak after i use the car. Or the transfer gear box is faulty and wearnig the seal.

Part changed the first time were LFRC2464 and LFTC4939.

The car is new from June and has done so far 12 000 KM of off road in Namibia.

Any help would be welcom. In the mean time, i had to cancel another trip for the week end and aaiting to go to the dealer on Monday. Stephan

Stephan,

The same happens in my 110 2007 after 36.000 km. I'm not sure about what can cause the seal failure but I will keep an eye on it.
I had a prevoius leakage in the handbrake drum at 10.000 km. I dont know if have some relation.

I had the same but was told it was the T,C spline shaft washer made of felt type material that was incorrectly fitted.
Not sure what they were on about but it sorted the leak. Puma 110 - gone

Mine went on the way back from the Alps last year. Gear/transfer box felt like it was over heating and you could not touch the metal part of the handbrake lever as it was too hot. New seal fitted and reported over heating to land rover who did Censored all and said there was no evidence.

just for interest sake - on my series III I have fitted a temp gauge (capillary type) to my t.case to keep an eye on the temp.
It is just against the casing at the moment but would like later to fit into the oil itself.
It gets to about 80'C on hot days especially up steep inclines.

Love to watch all my gauges while driving - gives me something to do at 80km/h max speed Very Happy Puma 110 - gone

Gent,

Thanks. I was thinking to install a gauge and possibly look at may be a small oil cooler for the oil of the tansfert case. However so far the heat is only disconfort and force me to stop more often to let the vehicle cool down.

Also just for experiment, i do not park the car with the hand brake on any more and we will see if the seals survive longer. Question
