300tdi gearbox installation
Hello all, I have a defenders with a 300tdi and a r380 and I am half way through changing my clutch. I've done a few of these now and have had all the usual problems but I'm really struggling to get the box back on for some reason. Box and t box are together, cross member is out and its supported by a crane with a load leveler. I checked the disc fitted the splines before putting it together, it's centred, I've put a dab of copper Greace on the shaft but having no luck. Does anybody have any good tips for getting the back on. I've even got a few nuts on the studs and had it as square as I could get it and tried pulling it on slightly and turning the crank from the other end but didn't want to over do it. Thanks in advance for any suggestions you may have. Cheers

I would be double checking if the clutch is centred properly.

I managed to get mine on with a bit of jiggling and fiddling with the engine crane!

I usually take the engine out for a clutch change. It sounds more long winded but potentially quicker in the long run, and less time on your back. You can get a good angle with the gearbox jacked up and it slots right in (With a bit of wiggle)

I think the first thing is making sure the friction plate is lined up, A light dab of that red grease on the splines. Then getting the right angle. If it won't go i turn the crank a little then try again. I also put the gearbox in neutral, i'm not sure if this helps or it's my superstition. Don't be afraid to take it off and start again. Sometimes it just goes.

All else fails, a plank of wood and a hammer always helps.
