swaybars and articulation
Gday guys and gals

Dunno if this is the right forum section but here goes

Just wondered what peoples thoughts were on removing swaybars/anti-roll bars for better axle articulation.

The vehicle in question is a 2013 defender 110 with stock as, factory springs and shocks

I have run with and without bars. my current 110 has them front & back.


If your dampers and springs are all standard length, then you'll not gain a huge amount in axle travel by ditching the rollbars, maybe an inch or so, but you'll lose some road manners.

Ok, they handle fine without the bars, but they handle a little bit better with them.

You will experience more body roll when cornering on the road.

Be warned though - in case of an accident, you insurer may point to that as a modification that reduced the vehicle's safety and refuse to pay out --

if your off roading and have anti roll bars fitted then if one wheel gets pushed up a lot or then arb will be trying to lift other wheel taking weight off the ground losing grip . same if one wheel drops in hole that wheel will not drop with same force pushing down on it , so yes will be worse for off roading /better on road.. but with standard bars fitted to be honest most of us it would make a bit of difference but enough to worry about ?
serious off roaders will know more on here

also there is a company that make arbs you can disconnect one side from other to have best of both worlds

You can fit an x deflex anti roll bar. These you disconnect to go off road.

To get serious gains you would need to overhaul the suspension.

Given that many Defenders don't have anti-roll bars fitted at all, although as far as I know the rest of the suspension components (springs and dampers) are the same, removing them is unlikely to be an issue. How significant the off-road performance gain is likely to be is debatable.

My 110 doesn't have them and body roll is quite acceptable. If your rear suspension has a Boge strut (self levelling thingy) you would probably be ill-advised to remove the ARB since you will experience much more body roll.

Leave them well alone and fit a rear locking diff. Unless you spend say more than 50% of your driving in terrain where you are likely to be lifting wheels constantly.

Well said re the Boge unit Blackwolf as the rear springs on these were ludicrously soft. However, if you still have a Boge unit fitted make sure it's working, they are getting on a bit now and most have failed. To my knowledge there are none left for sale new either anymore.

I ended up with TD5 springs and its removal when in failed and was actually a better ride. 1995 300 Tdi Epsom Green - It's a keeper.

My 90 doesn't have them and also my Camel Discovery didn't have them. And if one car is top have it is a Camel discovery. OK you could corner it like a 2CV but it never fell over. Twisted Evil Roel
