Just in the middle of changing everything over to Stainless Steel Sumo Bars from Gwyn Lewis and came up with the problem of pulling the arm off the steering box. We have a few different spec of Bearing and Pinion Pullers and because of the lack of space I could only get a 15t ![]() ![]() If I have to do this job again Im not going to waste a couple of weekends trying to pull it off. I'll just cut the thing off and it'll only take 10-15 minutes!! ![]() |

When I was chatting with Keith at Challenger he said they've yet to fail getting an arm off with a hydraulic puller - but they do take the box off to do it. I didn't bother and simply cut my old one off - I did try with plenty of penetrating fluid and a 'heavy' duty puller but that didn't even begin to touch it. Part of the trouble was getting the pullers to even get a grip on it.
Be careful as you may well cut into the splined shaft - although they're so thick they can take quite a beating. Years ago the recommendation was to speak directly to Adwest who I think are based in Reading - when I looked in Christmas it looked like they'd been taken over by someone else. Right then, if I'm reading this right you lot ( more experienced in all things L/R) are saying it is a total
![]() ![]() ![]() While your here, I have noticed that there are a few peeps selling new nut and washer kits for said arm... is this necessary? I'm reasonably confident that the old one will come off, once it's been introduced to me DeWalt impact wrench.... and I do possess a 3 foot breaker bar if that fails ![]() ML 270CDI |

Are you referring to the nut and washer at the bottom of the spline? I.e. that holds on the arm? They're normally pretty trivial to undo although the lock washer should be replaced as it tends to get pretty mangled if used several times.
You might as well spend 15 minutes seeing if the arm will actually come off. But I wouldn't waste any more time on it, you never know someone may have had it off previously and it may just fall off... ![]() With regards to impact vs. breaker bar my impact is usually much more successful - if I use a breaker bar I tend to shear things off my Milwaukee tends to break the seal of rust and then undo it. So far yet to find a nut it hasn't managed to undo, mind you it is rated to ~1600Nm ![]() 82 Hotspur Sandringham 6x6 95 Defender 110 300Tdi |

Well I've gone for the easy option... new arm and don't bother trying to remove it.... I'll just hold off ordering the steering box until tomorrow just incase someone says they are no good... Would be just my luck to jump now a get another horror story tonight

Never had the need to investigate power steering boxes.
However - and I can't believe I forgot this... Dad's been for several years now building adjustable power steering modules for rally cars. They're electric columns with then a knob on the dash to adjust the level of assistance you get. He suggested replacing the Defender's one so that we could remote control it for rabbit shooting - no idea whether he was serious or not ![]() 82 Hotspur Sandringham 6x6 95 Defender 110 300Tdi |
