Manifold de-webbing
I'm replacing my cylinder head tomorrow, and looking at de-webbing the exhaust manifold.

I know some have completely removed the webbing between the ports, some have just made a relief cut in the webbing between ports. Anyone have any experience? Thoughts on going one way or the other?

Oh, I do have an Alive stage 1 chipped ECU I that is going in as well.

Thanks for any help and suggestions Thumbs Up it's a Landrover thing...

Hi CDN38. I Have seen them bothways but have only had the relief cut version. It worked well for 4 years or so before warping as well. Have now gone for an Allisport manifold and fingers crossed it is A-OK thus far.

Would like to know your experience with Alives stage 1 remap as I am not happy with mine at all.

I have removed all webbing - it was easy on milling machine. And after 4 years no problem. I have it in Discovery 2, with some remap and over weight. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

I would have thought that simply cutting the webs would be highly likely to lead to stress raisers and subsequent cracking, unless you first drilled a hole and then cut to the hole. It is not something that I would do.

From an engineering standpoint removing the entire web would be considerably more satisfactory.

I've got this on my 110, been on for a while and thats heavily tuned. Not had any issues thus far.

I also refitted with these -

That said, I didnt break a single stud on removal and was not going to test fate by trying to change them, so the studs stayed put and I replaced the nuts with the copper flashed ones.

What are the things you are unhappy with in your Alive Stage 1? Interested in any feedback I can get.

Being that I bought an ECU with the new chip in it, I have a spare ECU I could also re-chip with a different tune for comparison. There isn't anyone here with capabilities to do re-programomg, so having an extra ECU is a bit of a luxury. it's a Landrover thing...

My apologies to all. I was obviously having a moment this morning. I do not have an Alive remap, but I would like to know what others think of theirs. My current map is nowhere near as smooth and refined as my previous IRB stage 1. I am looking to get the 110 tuned properly. Again apologies for the confusion.

When my original manifold went, I brought a stock warped second hand one,
Cut all the big bits of web / surplus metal with an angle grinder, finished it of with a die grinder, then set it up in a mill and machined the face flat,

That was probably 20-30k ago, still running a big remap and bits n pieces,
When I removed the original one it had three broken studs in the head,

I though gut I had a few pics of the de webbed one ? But can't locate them now,

I'll pop,um up if they arise

Cheers

Ok.. did the quickie on the manifold today. Took it off, and it was already warped a little, drilled, cut, flattened it on the belt sander. Not optimum, but I need to have the truck on the road tomorrow, and an Allisport manifold and uprated studs are at least a couple weeks away. The big problem with being so far away from where all the part are, if you are in the middle of installing something, and you find out you need another part... you are on hold for days, or even weeks.

I guess compared to the new AMC head going on, the manifold is a relative bargain at £545 Banging Head

The wallet is taking a beating this month, and it's only the 4th.

Hi CDN38. Yes that is irritating isn't it. Good job on the manifold by the way. Look at it as a "it'll do for now"...!

At the end of the day if you buy the allisport manifold and studs at a later date the job of swapping the parts over is at worst a relaxed saturday job and two wasted gaskets.

If you are interested I will dig out a few pics of the allisport manifold install I did 6 months or so ago.

Hi Guys. This is the Allisport manifold with wurth extended bolts, spacers and nuts. You will notice the purple colouration, that is just the metal tempering. Have to say I am very happy with the manifold, it is superbly designed and made. I will be taking it off this weekend to replace that darned coolant bung so will take a few more photos six months on.

Thanks for the pics geobloke! Yes, I really MUST get one of these manifolds. Interesting design, how the manifold stands further off the head, longer individual header tubes and a shorter collector where they all meet. Do you run the standard (or any)heat shield over top? it's a Landrover thing...
