I wouldn't choose to put anything other than what the manufacturer recommends but they are pros and even if it did go wrong theyd have to fix it if they made a mistake. 2009 2.4TDCi XS Utility Wagon.

I don't like your chances of proving them at fault except with over filling it. As others have said 2.2ltrs is the amount for the g/box. No level plug on these boxes.
I used Castrol Syntrans until an independent mechanic I use recommended an Oz Penrite oil for both boxes and the diffs.
He's pretty thorough in his research and if he's happy with that so am I.
