Disco 2 V8 into Defender?
Have tried a search but couldn't find an answer.

I am looking for a manual Disco V8 to drive for a bit but with the ultimate aim of transplanting the engine & gearbox into a Defender. Had been planning on going for a (Gems?) 3.9 (serpentine belt) D1 manual as a donor on the basis that the transplant would be pretty straight forward. Now been to see a low mileage D2 with a sweet running V8 (Thor?) but it has an auto box. Question I need to know the answer to is whether there is an ECU for the gearbox & if so would it be creating problems if the auto box was ditched & a manual box fitted - loom/ECU shared/dependent on one another???

Thanks.

I looked into this myself, I am pretty sure that the Disco 2 has an ECU for the gearbox. I dont know if it is 'paired' with the engine ECU but it would be very likely. The older 14CUX stand alone ecu ( disco 1 ) wont transplant onto your engine as it wont do the ignition and your engine has no distributor.

Thanks Jim, I think that confirms my thinking which is a pity as it was one sweet running V8. Will just have to keep looking for a D1 3.9 manual I guess.

Disco 2 V8 auto has a gearbox ECU which communicates via CANbus (yes, really!) with the engine ECU. It may be that the engine will run quite happily without the gearbox ECU but I don't know. I am sure that there are those who do know, on this forum.

Ashcroft sell the 'ECU' for the box, compushift. The box is a 4hp24eh, electric hydraulic as opposed to the 4hp22h (hydraulic) in a disco 1, this is the problem
