United Kingdom 2013 Defender 110 Puma 2.2 USW Orkney Grey

It was a miserable wet day today so I thought I'd do a bit of inside tinkering and sort out the speedo lights that had apparently fallen out. As is so often the way with Land Rovers though, it wasn't as straightforward as it seemed Rolling Eyes

The first thing I discovered was that both the instrument panel and the cowling behind were broken, which was a Censored . Then, having got to the speedo, I found that the white plastic collars that hold the bulbs in place had both been snapped off the back of the case. It looked like the whole dash had been clouted with something. The previous owner had tried to use aluminium tape to fix the speedo lights, and failed completely. Anyway, I fixed them with epoxy:

Then I also tried gluing the instrument panel but without success, so I've ended up buying a replacement from eBay. For the cowling, I've bought a metal replacement from Raptor Engineering to solve that problem once and for all.

So, what started out as a five minute job saw me faffing around for about three hours and then spending over 100 on parts Rolling Eyes

On a more positive note, I bought a TD5 clock to replace the existing chrome-bezelled Smiths one and elsewhere on the forum I've been told where to get the appropriate connector for it. Woo hoo. Darren

Good news! The parts have started to arrive to repair my dash. First, an all but complete dash from eBay. The design of the warning light cluster suggests it's from a slightly later model. It also comes with a volt meter, which is an added bonus. This will get stripped and cleaned before re-assembling with my existing speedo.

Next is a new powder coated metal instrument cowl from Raptor Engineering, to replace the existing broken one. This is lovely quality and it's a shame it won't be seen once it's in place:

Finally for now, the connector for the TD5 clock that I've bought has also arrived:

The bad news is that all of these parts are going to sit in a box for a couple of weeks whilst I recover from a minor op:

I'm not sure. The graphics are more subtle than my existing one and, apart from a missing '24v' symbol in the bottom right position, it's exactly the same as on mine. Darren

Still on light duties whilst my hand recovers, but managed to spend a bit of time today dismantling and cleaning my replacement dashboard. I discovered that baby wipes are great for removing years of grime:

The only bits that I couldn't get completely clean were the heater graphics on each side, but I risked damaging them by trying to remove them, so abandoned that idea.

I also labelled up the wiring and took a stack of reference photos and notes before disconnecting Rolling Eyes

With a bit of luck, I'll get to reassemble the whole thing in the vehicle next weekend... Darren

I successfully cleaned those graphics with pure Isopropylalcohol. Cheers, Vincent

Did you remove them from the plastic surround? It looks like they're dirty between the clear front part and the printed graphic but I'm assuming they're glued in. Darren

No, I did not. Just cleaned them with a soft cloth with isopropylalcohol. Perfectly clean. Cheers, Vincent

Thanks. The intention is really just a weekend toy. There are a few bits and pieces that do need 'restoration' - particularly the interior - but it is essentially sound. Won't be long before I can start the fun stuff of a few mods to personalise it.

Instruments

I was finally able to make some progress today by re-assembling the instrument cluster. These things are never straightforward though. I spent ages chasing an obscure fault with the new warning light pack that I finally resolved by stripping the printed circuit off the original one and fitting it to the new one.

I painted the lower panel before fixing it to the new Raptor cowl:

The cowl is pretty cool and fits perfectly. Because it's much stiffer than the plastic part it replaces, it only uses four of the five original fixings. Also, whilst I had it all apart, I took the opportunity to clean 25 years of crud and dust from behind it Rolling Eyes

I picked up a powder coated, aluminium surround for the switches to the right of the steering column, again to replace a cracked plastic part, and fitted the cleaned up original switches to it:

And the whole thing back together:

The only thing I didn't do was run a suitable supply for the newly acquired volt meter, but that's a job for another day. Darren

Seats

The other, far more satisfying, job that I managed to get done was to replace the front seats. I picked up a pair of very tidy standard seats in Techno trim from Jeffers of this parish to replace the completely shot vinyl originals.

Taking the old seats out was relatively straightforward - four bolts each plus the lap belt for the centre seat. I then spent a bit of time cleaning up the top of the seat box, again from 25 years of dust and debris, and cleaning up the salvaged bolts.

Whilst access was easy, I took the opportunity to replace a damaged seat belt stalk:

And then bolted the new seats in:

Eventually, there will be a cubby box in the middle but before then, there's more cleaning and then painting of the access panels and sound proofing to fit before, probably, a hardura finish. Darren
