I hate to say it because you are right, but technically he maybe English by adoption given he now lives outside London. I'm annoyed that the media call him English (and not because I'm in favour of Independence because I'm most definitely not!), had he lost last night you can be sure he'd be Scots!
Given that the Olympics do not have the 4 UK countries then he MUST be referred to as British! in keeping with the Team he is part of! |

I like the fact that you consider being called "English" a promotion ![]() There were a couple of odd things they said after the match on BBC and I didn't catch it all and missed it if they said they were English fans. They were going on about the Brazilian fans being honorary British fans at the time and I was still trying to figure out what that meant so may have missed it ! It was embarrassing to see some of the fans supporting Murray though, as you say, the berets and comedy ginger wigs lack a certain credibility ! http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/ |

Unfortunately the media do open their mouths first without engaging their brains.
If I was Scottish I would be well ![]() I think all the athletes in the GB Olympic squad deserve our support and admiration for what has been another outstanding performance in Rio. Away from the Olympics as an Englishman I always hope that the other home nations do well on the world sporting stage and will always fully support them. (Unless of course they are playing England ![]() |

I don't hear you complaining about BBC Scotland's coverage of the olympics!
I watch it most morning while getting ready for work and particularly remember them talking about the great Scottish victory where team gb won silver in the 4x100m men's relay. They were over the moon that 3 of the team were scots and then muttered under their breath that they were actually finishing 4 if it wasn't for the English man at the end that took them from 4th to 2nd! I've never really understood it being Team GB actually.
Great Britain is the island that comprises Wales, England and Scotland. The British Isles includes the whole of Ireland (but the ROI competes separately). The UK is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and that's the group that we compete as so why is it Team GB rather than Team GB&NI or Team UK or Team WESNI or something? I also find it awkward with the USA, because if you say someone is American that includes the US but also Canada and potentially a few other countries, or if you take it as the whole of the Americas then there are loads of countries. But USAicans have nicked the "American" term as their own as if the whole of America is the US. A Canadian is indisputably an American but if you call a Canadian and American you'll seriously insult them. But what do you call someone that's from the US? Or for that matter the UK? "Hi, I'm British" "Hi, I'm French" "Hi, I'm Canadian" "Hi, I'm from the US" doesn't quite flow so well. |

There was an interesting article on the BBC News site about whether it should be Team GB or not. Basically the Olympic Commitee's argument is that whatever you call it will be wrong unless it's so wordy no one will say it, so it's staying as GB.
Some points of complication: GB isn't right for the reason sited above. UK isn't right because it doesn't include some of the islands (channel islands etc). NI athletes have free choice of whether they compete for GB or ROI, so including NI in the title might be deemed wrong. Team of People from Islands in and Around the North Sea that Don't Compete for anyone else in that general area. Hang-on what about Falklands?.... |

Good idea - merge them all into the British Commonwealth team. Medals galore.

While were talking about Team GB, seeing as they are doing so well it seems our Euro masters want to get in on the act, and have produced a table with Team Eurozone leading the medal table. Nevermind the fact that Team GB has won most of them. But then I suppose this will be the last Olympics that they can include our medals into the Team Eurozone tally 110 D250 SE HT

This is sport that's not based on something with a motor of some kind, right? Who cares? Its all just people running about working up a sweat, blurgh. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.
