Hydraulic Power steering on 110
Hi All!

A while ago I have bought a 2.5N/A 110 HT Defender (I know it is actually just named as a 110) in France. A very nice car with low milage, has always done her job on the wine yards. I am restoring her at this moment, getting the chassis galvanized, respraying, converting it into a soft top, and overhauling the engine, transferbox and gearbox etc.
While I am taking it apart I noticed there is no power steering because of the manual steering box.
I have a hydraulic power steering set to put on on the steering rod and also a hydraulic pump on the engine. Also the hydraulic pump is driven by the same singel belt which also drives the alternator and the fan.

It is a Power steering set for series and early Defenders, so question SOLVED

Depends how far you want to go.

If you want to keep it fairly original then just remove it and keep it as non power steering. Not sure what should be there but I don't remember there being anything there on a standard 2.5n/a

I'm not sure if there was a power steering option for the 2.5na but I would be surprised if there was not. parts may be prohibitively expensive though.

If it was me, I would find a old 200Tdi Discovery and fit the engine, Intercooler etc into yours and use a standard defender power steering setup. Much easier for future maintenance and will give the vehicle a new lease of life as the 2.5n/a is a bit of an agricultural lump - but will go on forever!

I wouldn't really want to chance with the setup as is. I'm sure it is fine and has been on there for years but there is a lot of weight there and that ram looks capable of putting a huge amount of force if it was to go wrong. Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

True, I have thought about fitting a 200Tdi but I want this one to be fairly original and I like the tractor like diesel Laughing
I bought it for toddling (it that even an english word?) through town and the surroundings. [2015] Land Rover Defender 2.2 TD SW 110 X-Tech

I can't find the link from my phone, but it is possible to buy retrofit power steering kits for series vehicles. That looks pretty similar to those, so may just be an aftermarket kit been fitted? Although obviously not original, it looks fairly proper!

That is an aftermarket PAS system of a fairly conventional design.

Have seen similar before fitted to forrestry series/pre defenders which were fitted with large agri-tyres or tracks. Think it was possibly used to stop the large wheels bending the front steering link in boggy ground and possibly as the standard PAS didnt provide enough assistance. 02' 110 TD5 Double Cab Rebuild Thread

Hydro assist is quite commonplace in the challenge scene, most use a similar principle to what you have got, modern versions are available front the likes of Gwynn Lewis though to full hydro steer systems.

If it works I'd leave it as it does look a period modification and will be a lot better than no power steering

I've no idea about your steering but that's a perfect use for the English word "toddling". Bumbling around slowly and not necessarily in the most direct route. A child learning to walk is often called a toddler.

Calzoni steering kits used to be a popular add-on to series vehicles (here in France at any rate). Not so common to see on a 90/110 Smile

Then I am not so surprised it is indeed a Hydraulic power steering set for Series and Early Defenders, thanks! [2015] Land Rover Defender 2.2 TD SW 110 X-Tech
