Painting galv crossmember
Time has come to paint the galv rear x-member. Can I just use standard etch primer followed by a top coat of satin black or am i going to need a special primer? 1999 Defender TD5 110

If it's new galv then you'll need to apply T-Wash (mordant solution), then etch primer then topcoat.

If the galv has been weathered for a year or two then you can generally skip the first step.

Just out of interest for anyone hand painting Dulux do a product called METALSHIELD Quick Dry Primer which is specifically for 'new bright or weathered galvanized surfaces' will also do non-ferrous metals. Not cheap at £100+ per 5l but can save a lot of messing with mordant. We have used it extensively and so far has done the job.

The x-member has been fitted for around 3-4 months.

I shall take a look at T-wash/Mordant solution 1999 Defender TD5 110

So as of this weekend, my rear door will have a new galv skin on it. I guess the same logic applies? In which case it will stay unpainted for now!!!

If you use mordant solution, just make sure you wear skin and eye protection! It's nasty stuff, ventilation is also a good idea.
Here's my chassis before and after.... Brush it on liberally and leave it for half hour-to an hour, then wash it off thoroughly.
