For owners of the best towing mirrors in the world the ‘Milenco Grand Aero mirrors’ well they have just got better. The fixing clamp (the latest Aero3 clamps) have been updated for 2016 and they now give an even better grip on your Defender mirror arms, the improved fitting gives greater security and grip to ensure these mirror fits all new model cars, including the latest Land Rover models. I have just fitted a set and they are more secure than ever.
You can buy the new clamps separately from any Milenco stockist or direct from ‘Just Milenco’ so that owners of the old style clamps can upgrade to have the latest features just make sure the clamps are the new ones Product no. 4589 http://www.justmilenco.co.uk/epages/es1349...Categories For those who have not heard about the Grand Aero mirror, the head is the largest ever used on a towing mirror, and has been specifically designed extremely stable, with the shape enabling you to see far past your caravan or trailer and can see cars in all three lanes on the motorway. The clamping screws are stainless steel and turn in brass inserts, which will never corrode, and all Aero Mirrors are fitted with chrome safety glass, which will not discolour in time For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at.. http://www.youtube.com/user/conwy1 |

Thanks for posting. I have been looking at getting a pair for the new season. I've been making do with pulling out the defender arms, which I know, isn't exactly legal.

Isn't it? I'd always assumed that's why they pulled out?
Also, what's the requirement for towing mirrors, I can quite happily reverse our cattle float with the standard ones? |

If you purchase a pair of the Grand Aero mirrors also purchase a pair of Milenco Aero Arms Wide which will help give even greater visibility behind the trailer or caravan.
http://www.justmilenco.co.uk/epages/es1349...pair%29%22 As the law now states. There is a legal requirement for you to have mirrors that allow you to see clearly an area that is 4 metres wide from the side of your caravan or trailer at a distance 20 metres The extra wide arms gives you that extra visibility on a Defender For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at.. http://www.youtube.com/user/conwy1 |

The law says this; failure to see behind the trailer means three penalty points and a fine. I see VOSA and the police stop cars with trailers regularly on the A5 and A55 to check mirrors and while an officer stands behind the trailer an officer sits in your driving seat to see if they can see him while he stands 4m at 20m. ![]() Click image to enlarge For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at.. http://www.youtube.com/user/conwy1 |

Forward towing of our caravan, I can honestly say I don't have a problem personally, but I know I can't see what is illustrated in that diagram.
When it comes to reversing, that's where it becomes a struggle on the blind side. |

Grand Aero’s with the extended arms will solve all your rear vision and reversing problems. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

Difficult one as it’s down to personal taste, I prefer flat mirrors as it gives a truer image and in my mind because of this is safer, the convex mirrors make objects in the mirror closer than they appear and for me that is an issue, OK convex mirrors show a larger field of view than flat but as the Grand Aero mirrors are large anyway the field of view is not an issue.
I also have flat glass in my door mirrors so they match. If you have convex mirrors in your door mirrors it may be better to go for convex in a towing mirror as well, mixing flat and convex mirrors in the same field of view may lead to confusion as to rear car distances. I can't find where you've got that picture from gilarion but I don't understand your explanation of 4m and 20m.
From my own research: https://www.gov.uk/towing-with-car/towing-equipment https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/syst...irrors.pdf http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1986/1078/regulation/33/made
I would class "adequate" as being able to see the two rear corners of the trailer, which I'm happy that I can do. Obviously if I was towing something really fat then that would need a bit of assistance. Speaking from experience, that isn't always good enough though. I've reversed a trailer over the front of a car that I had no idea had parked behind me in our yard. I was driving a tractor with a full trailer behind and going nice and slowly, there was no clunk or anything. First I knew was its owner running towards me flapping his arms. He'd parked it, gone on a wander and come back to find his car reversing up the yard with a trailer sat on the bonnet. |

When the driver is sat in his seat he or she need to be able to see an object 4m from the side of the trail/caravan at a distance of 20 M to the rear measured from the drivers head backwards. Can someone please cite the source of the 4m at 20 measurements because like cupboard I can only see mention of adequate view behind the trailer? I just don't want to spend a load of money on something I don't have to and given the amount of misinformation about towing eg the 85% weight thing pushed by the caravan club, I want to know before hand what is an actual proper legal requirement and not just some bit of best practice invented to sell something. If it is actually legal then I will comply but then and only then. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

Oh and from the picture of blind spots it would be possible to see an object at 4x20 with normal mirrors? Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

Getting back to the original post...........The Milenco part number for the new clamp is .....4589 Aero Clamp . The old product clamp is product code 1960.
I have spoken to Milenco who assure me that the new clamps will fit a Defender mirror. Don't make old people mad. We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to ![]() Richard |
