Weight difference st steel and boost
Changed my wheels and tyres today. Standard steel wheels with michelin latitude cross came off, boost alloys with continental cross contact went on. I thought the alloys would be lighter so for interest I weighed them . Steel with latitude cross 27.4 kg, alloy with continental 33.4 kg. Quite a difference especially as there
is not that much difference in size. I guess the theory of alloy wheels being lighter than steels is a load of rubbish.

Alloy might weigh less, but you need more of it. Wink

Well yes, there is that, but I guess rover has just put on 235/85 tyres instead of 7.50 tyres. Given that 235s are quite a bit bigger than 7.50s there will be a weight difference there too.

There will also be a difference between different makes of 235.

Given the moderate increase in size and the theory that alloy is lighter than steel I expected them to weigh about the same, not the 6kg increase in weight. I can only guess that the continental tyres are far heavier duty than the michelin. It would be interesting to know how heavy some of the massive tyres /wheels people put on like 285 etc, I bet 40kg plus, this must make a negative difference to performance compared to 27 kg with respect to accelerating and stopping.

My 285/60R18 Zeon LTZs were delivered yesterday, wth a weight of 21.5kg for tyres alone, indeed more than the wheel itself

A lot more rubber in a 235 tyre. I wouldn't say that the Contis are particularly heavy duty, especially in comparison to the Michelins.

Weigh a bare standard steel wheel and an alloy wheel and see what the difference is.

Are you saying that the Michelin Latitudes are strong, the Continentals are flimsy or a bit of both?

A bit of both I suspect. I had the Lattitudes on first and they were good, lasted well (they were just over half worn when bought and I got 25k out of them) and good performance/economy. Then changed to the Contis and while they were OK and surprisingly good off road I was a bit put out that I only got just over 33,000 miles out of the set, I think the compound is quite soft compared to true ATs and the gravel roads I do a lot of miles on wore them out quicker than normal as others report more successful mileages from them. I'm not sure what the difference between the two tyres is in terms of number of sidewall or tread plies is without looking it up.

I'm now on proper BFG ATs (old style) which have been on just over 15,000 miles/6 months and are maybe worn 1 or 2 mm at the very most. No appreciable difference in road noise or economy from the Contis either so I will probably not bother with road pattern tyres again. I also find the handling is better with the BFGs than the Contis, though that may be down to wear on the old set compared to brand new tyres.

That said I don't like the more aggressive sidewall styling of the newer style of BFG AT at all so we will see what's out there when this set eventually wears out (about 90,000 miles/3 years at this rate).

Goodness knows what's happen to my Michelins then, they're almost completely worn out at 21k miles old.
I'd say they'd been swapped with a higher mileage car but the date stamps all match up.

My Michelins are worn out at 28k, worn quickly but did grip well, must be a soft compound for grip compared to true off road tyres.

Remember it's almost like for like, think standard steel wheels are good for a ton,Boosts are 7-850kg.The strongest alloys as far as I know are Blindos about 1550kgs, a link for the "facts"http://www.silverlinewheels-tyres.com/downloads/blindoWheel.pdf),
Wolf steel wheels are 2200kgs,and weigh 15.3kg, Blindo's are 1550kgs and weigh 14.3 kgs, down to you, crossing the most harshest terrain in the world when younneed to hammer your rims straight,Wolfs for the win, everything else Blindo's,tho Terrafirma are also worth looking at. Pov.spec,ftw. 2006, 110,TD5.
