United Kingdom 2007 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 XS CSW Tonga Green
Looks great!

I drove to the Alps and back (from Cornwall) in a Saxo VTR with no problems.

A Defender can easily handle it but the driver and passengers may arrive deaf! Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion.

Why Question Maybe I'm just used to it but I don't think my Defenders that noisy, I manage to listen to the radio at 70 with no problems, must be a quiet one. Thumbs Up Original Member Pie n Pea Club.

Compared to the BM, the Defender is a deafening. It's definitely way better than it used to be but still loud. Loads of wind noise too. Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion.

I find mine fine (21,000 miles in 16months).... in fact, over Christmas me and my bro went bowling... because back home the closest bowling alley is 30 miles away, we decided to go in his car as he didn't want to go in a 'noisy agricultural vehicle'. His 2009 1.6 Seat Leon is a damn sight noisier than my Defender!

Glyn - I find mine fine too but it's a lot louder than our "long distance" car which even at (ahem) a wee bit over 70, you can still hold a conversation without raising your voice.

Mind you, it's Vmax is almost double the Defenders to while at MWay speeds the 110 is near it's max speed, the BM is only halfway there and hardly "notices" - in fact 90 in the BM is about 2k rpm in 5th (out of 6).

Oh and Glyn - your very own signature called the car a "Defener" Laughing Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion.

My biggest buzz is without doubt the SkierX. The crosser park in Les Contamines is a scream. Choice of routes in (although I prefer the run from Aggy Cross, down the mogul field and then through the pipe) followed by an insanely fast, heavily banked cross course. Pure magic with an adrenaline hard-on for afters.

I think I may have just done a little wee in anticipation of my next run out there Mr. Green

Defender or 330D Touring to the alps? It's a long drive, the beemer is chipped so it's quicker than a standard 335D, although mine doesn't red line at 6k, is your's a special 335D petrol? If I can convince the family I will much prefer the Defender, If I can convince the accountant then it's the M5!

Errmmm - a chipped 330d will not be quicker than a 335d - trust me on that one. The latest one (240ish bhp) can be brought up to 270ish bhp - most stock 335ds are kicking out over 300. And you will still be a fair bit short on torque. I have many BM owning mates and this has been done to death.

Even with similarish power, the 330d still only has one turbo so has a gap in the power delivery, plus the lower redline, smaller brakes and "corrupted" electronically assisted steering (335d and 335i have fully hydraulic steering). It may keep up in a straight line but on real roads, the 335d will still be in front.

However I wouldn't take ours to the Alps - I'd take the Defender. And some ear "defenders" too. Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion.

+1 Thumbs Up

I have had both (the 330d was DMS mapped) and it wasn't a patch on the 335 (and the 330 was a saloon with the 335 being a touring), not even in a straight line.....a quoted bhp figure doesn't mean it will turn out at the wheels; the entire set up is relevant and has to be considered.

By the same token, don't let anyone tell you a chipped 335i is as good as an M3, they may be able to keep up in a straight line but there is an overriding reason an M series motor (not a badged up M Sport) is made in a different factory Whistle

And a final observation, anyone who says an M3 is quicker than an M5, they have never been in an M5 Thumbs Up

Having said all of the above, I have seen a mildly tuned Seat Leon TDI (basic remap) go round a track quicker than a 335d. The final lesson, if you can't drive, move over Very Happy

TC - I've seen the "my mapped 335i is quicker than an M3" thing a few times. As you say, it's a bit silly.
However I do know a few people who take it further - they fit an LSD, mod the engine a lot (to 450+bhp), fot better brakes, shocks, etc - only then can they "worry" an M3 and even then they still don't look right.

M5 is stupidly quick - only downers are the gearbox (to some) and the hideous range between stops (and 10ish mpg)!

All "fast" BMs are good though - by fast I mean over 250bhp. Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion.
