Interesting article, thanks for posting.

I'm sure that's what I saw whilst at Lode Lane on the Defender tour. On asking the tour guide 'what was that?' I got the reply... 'I didn't see anything!' Confused

Slightly concerned about the comment on the new Defender "we’ve got to be quite radical" Shocked

We will wait and see.....

Thanks for posting the article. There is some quite interesting info in there Thumbs Up

This paragraph is really quite concerning Shocked

"Not that the styling will be retro, as McGovern says the new models will bear no resemblance to the DC100 concepts: 'I think the Defender was good for it’s time, but I think we’ve got to be quite radical, and create if we create a vehicle that is special and does resonate with people, they will forget what they had before.'"

Heartbreaking... Big Cry

It's all smoke and mirrors! In one interview McGovern says it will be recognisable as a defender and in another it's going to be radical and one interveiw says it'll be priced above the discovery this one says the disco is getting closer to the Range Rover Rolling Eyes basically they haven't got a clue what it's going to be yet except for the engine. Ray

As Thor44 said.

Will be a big mistake loss the resemblance with the old Series/defender in the new model.
For sure cannot be the same due production costs and new regulation, but it is neccesary to keep the lineage to have a success. If not will be associated to a common asian SUV despite the performance that can achieve.

In my opinion when you sell a car you not only sale the performance, you must sell an history and the Series/Defender have a very good one, but you must to link it to de succeful.

JLR have a big asset there and if they were smart they should try to use it.
For sure more thane 70% of the population can identify a Series/Defender with the adventure and the off road and not all the car manufacturers can said that.

Cheers Eduardo

Maybe I've missed posts in the past about this,

however how come Mercedes who made this years ago, basic, and an Army model also manage to keep this alive and now looks like the other cars in the range inside with air bags and modern tech...

Why could LR no do this with the defender, basically but the Defender shell on top of a disco ?

The G class must be sold in tiny tiny numbers now, probably more in dubai the 6 wheel drive ones !!

so from this

To what it is now

Will someone still produce a Defender of sorts? like you can still get a VW combi? Last year we spoke to Mr Khan on the stand at the Geneva show and they were making these....

Huge interest from the middle east as they already have the 6 wheel drive G class and these are something different...

I tend to think progress is generally good, I would how ever be more than happy with my car with a Disco interior and running gear as a 'new model' so it Looks stay the same just like the G class but its evolved...

I thought the pictures had been photoshopped, then I realised they were for real.

My second thought was HOW MUCH!

The reason that this article conflicts with other ones published in the last 3 months, it that this one is digging up old quotes that have been superseded!

Look at the comment regarding the Disco Sport "Leisure, that’s Discovery, and that’s in the plural because at the moment we’ve only got one Discovery, but we’re doing more, starting with the Discovery Sport."

"We thought it’s about time as it’s 60 years since the original."

How old are those quotes?

We have the Disco 5 coming, and talk of a smaller brother to the Disco Sport and a bigger brother to the Evoque before the new Defender.

The old DC100 concepts were based on the steeel D8 platform being used for the Evoque & Disco Sport but we are now told that the new Defender will use a version of the aluminium D7u platform.

I have seen the new disco out and about on test, does absolutely nothing for me.

The linked article is typical, and worrying. I honestly think JLR do not know what they are doing with regard to the new Defender. I'm still of the mind that they should just drop the idea, rename the company as Range Rover and move on. They do not have the will to make Utilities/Defenders, but they fear that by not doing so they will damage the reputation of the company. As I see it, the hyper-luxury SUV model seems to do very well for them so run with it, and without insulting the rest of us by offering some new kind of goodness knows what as a Defender alternative. I had thought McGovern (Ill remind you again, photos shows him sat with crossed arms staring into space as the last Defender rolled down the line) had been muzzled regarding the new Defender after he was quite insulting.

Either way, I think if I ever buy a new car again it is likely to be a VW or a Mercedes. Unlikely in any case. 2011 110 USW

^^Certainly is but still people get all het up and as a result trot out the same old stuff.

Save it until something substantiated, preferably current and direct from JLR, is published. Steve.
