TGV 2.8 into a Puma Defender
Hi,

Has anybody installed a TGV 2.8 into a Puma? If so what transmission was used and what was the finished combination like? Were there any complications? Thoughts? Opinions?

Will agree as above,, Why ??

TDV to upgrad 300 TDi, well worth it,, but a Puma ? 3 steps at least backwards ! California F1, 75th 110 "Kermit", 50th Ann V8, 90 V8 Hybrid, 55 Series 1

Reliability for over landing much more simple to fix on the roadside just a few reasons

Would be better to go for the tdv6 from IRB if you want more power and keep with modern electrics tbh 2008 110 2.4 XS Utility (Hagrid)

I don't see how you could legally do it in the UK. How would you meet the emissions requirements of a modern diesel car with a Tdi?

Andy (sponsor) AJS tyres http://www.reigate-tyres.co.uk/ has the TGV 2.8 running in a project 90 so they might be able to offer some advice.

Why?

Well sick of limp mode, fragility of the engine in terms of fuel requirements, sensor failures, clutch failures and what seems to be a lack of understanding from the dealers and some independent specialists how to fix them. Without this forum and the advice I have found or or given my car would never turn a wheel. The technology is fine but it is not dependable so I am looking for options that are.

Hi James

The car is really a run about, no heavy towing or loads. Occasional long journey.

Reliability is the end goal

Thanks

Dave

Depending on what you've already got and how set on the 'mechanical/non-electronic' end product you are I would probably suggest flogging yours and buying a cheap/tatty 300 tdi to rebuild to your own spec. You would end up pouring money into a puma to remove the electronics/ increase reliability and IMO end up with a seriously devalued mongrel vehicle.

Given that Pumas are generally very reliable, it'd be cheaper to sort yours out (or find someone who knows how to sort yours out) than attempt to retrofit an arguably obsolescent and non-compliant engine into it.

i run two tgvs as said above both in 90s.

the first in a truck cab i have had around 10k miles over the last 10ish years. the engine was 2nd hand with 10k miles on it, complete with gbox and allisport std sized rad and intercooler and all pipework. its in my drive round day truck so its only used twice a month or so with a couple of longer runs to Wales maybe twice a year. it used to be used as a challenge entry level truck so the low down grunt of the TGV with its simplicity 10years ish ago was superb. its running a laminova and and air to oil cooler for the ashcroft HP24/22 amalgamation with a med sized (4.0L) TC. 1.4 T box and 33" BFG MTs.

the second is in my trayback. i bought a 300tdi aged Discovery that had had the conversion fitted to it from M&D. engine had about 60k on it when i got it. i have had it approx 6 years. its done around 2k miles in that period all at events and all off road. vehicle runs two air to oil coolers 24 and 18 row ones with ashcroft monster box HP22/24 amalgamation with large (4.6L) TC. 1.6 t box on 37" tyres. also running a larger intercooler and an Alisport V8 custom radiator with twin spal fans.

i went for auto on both as both are on winch vehicles and i find it easier to match winch line speed to wheel rotation speed in an auto. the auto takes the shunt out of the driveline too and no clutches to worry about. bear in mnid a std tune tgv has same torque bar 20Nm as a stage 1 ish remapped td5.

i went for TGV as i wanted simplicity and parts are cheap. most are straight off a 300tdi - timings belts, filters, pumps etc. Not alternator is a specific one, is has a rear through drive to the vac pump for brake system. i run this on one of mine and run an aux vac pump (elec) on the trayback to i could fit a bigger alt as std.

dont expect brisk performance if running the auto. both mine are tunned up now using an EGT gauge. the Truck Cab will chirp a tyre under hard acceleration - but only just and its on MTs so they are likely to slip more than a road tyre. i cant comment on a manual.

dont underestimate the engine cooling for them. go large and go special from day one, work on over cooling them.

they also need a lot of air, more than a 300tdi and possibly more than a TD5/Puma - i never made the later calculations. 75mm dia feed min.

problems with mine - the 60k one came with a Censored keyway on the crank which was easily resolved on next cam belt change (std 300tdi parts) truck cab one has had some starter motors over its life, down to lots of wading and it did break a cam belt (2 push rods said good bye) but both were my doing/fault.

i like them for their simplicity and ease to fix in the field with cheap availability of parts.

i dont however use the vehicles everyday or as my day to day driver. If i had a 300/200tdi they would be a massive leap forward. i dont though, i have a 2.4 110. the TGVs dont even come close to comparing. they are louder, slower and use more fuel. refinement is not in the equation comparing a TGV to a 2.4 or a TD5. Note i am comparing two AUTO tgvs though to a man 2.4.

If you seldom going over 50mph then the noise and speed wouldn't be a an issue but if your going to be doing the main road/motorway miles then get a td5 or better still a Vogue......

Would i fit one in my 2.4 - No
Would i fit one in a tdi powered vehicle - yes
Would i want to buy a new one - not a hope they are sooooooo £££££££ Cheers
