Variable intermittent wipers for TD5 Defender

Hi All,

I have posted a query on the Puma site as well but I would like to hear from TD5 Defender owners who have converted their wipers to variable intermittent function by using one of the VW "99" relays (It is 357 955 531 and has the number 99 on the top face, and 4496 on one side. It is marked VW and also DDP DODUCO PAB6-GF30.)

They seem to have been successfully used by several Puma owners in place of the normal wiper delay relay.

The reason I ask is that I have tried to use one of these and have a problem with it. Everything works correctly, except that if the washers are activated, the wipers remain stuck on, instead of turning off after 3 or 4 wipes. The only way to turn them off is to turn off the ignition (!).

I would like to hear from TD5 owners who have installed these relays with successful operation. There is more detail in my posting on the TDCi list.

1996 Defender 110 300 Tdi USW Bonatti Grey

Ive fitted two of these into my 300tdi.

The first one caused my wipers to remain on permenantly, until the relay was pulled out again.

The second one almost worked, but the wipers only did a quarter of a wipe at a time, causing them to stop halfway across the windscreen.

My quest for variable intermitent wipers continues...

I have one in my TD5 and it works perfectly. Think you may have a faulty relay.

I'm with Zinke - all good. Just done the intermittent rear wiper mod and also happy - though more work than expected!

Interesting fault. In the recent really cold weather I have found that if I use the intermittent setting on the wipers they will not stop, just wipe continuously even iff switched to the off position. The only waty to stop them is either to switch off the 'ignition', or, as I found this morning, to blip the windscreen washer after which they will park normally.

Once the cab has warmed up a bit, it all works fine again!

The relay was second-hand, so its history is unknown.

Despite this, I still think this is one of the best low-cost upgrades.
