Hello,
My Puma aircondition compressor magnetic clutch is pulling way to much amps and it blow the 20A fuse immediately. There is only part number for the whole compressor. Is the clutch electrical part available separately? Brgds, Juha '96 300Tdi 90 '07 Puma 90 |

Thanks, perhaps my description was too brief, sorry.
I have traced the wiring from diagrams and the compressor relay is under right front seat. Relay C0712. With a multimeter I measured about 0,3Ohm in this circuit, but this low values are not accurate. However this translate to ~40A. The compressor itself is turning by hand, but the clutch won't engage because the electric magnet pull too many amps. I believe the electric magnet is bad, I didn't have my insulation resistance meter with me to check the winding and verify this. Brgds, Juha '96 300Tdi 90 '07 Puma 90 |

That link is to a Td5 compressor (OP's username is "Td5, the avatar is a 300Tdi, but the original post did say Puma!) I realise that it is probably little help to the OP but I have a surplus Puma 2.4 compressor which came off a 2007 engine I bought as a spare (the engine, that is), which I don't need. I would happliy part with it for a modest price, but I imagine shipping to Finland would be prohibitive. I would suggest, after my recent experiences with the engine wiring loom, that there may well be a short in the harness rather than a compressor fault. |

Looked at the name and pounced on the issue. I even downloaded the TD5 diagrams to have a look see. Little wonder I couldn't locate relay C0712. What a plonker I am. My fault.....too much haste.  If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Well, I need to explain, even it is said, never explain....
A little history. After long pondering time, I counted my money and bought a 2002 Defender 110 Td5. Very quickly I realized that it was too new and shiny (expensive) for the use I had in mind. Sold the car and we went to Germany and I bought a 1996 Defender 90 300Tdi. Very few Defender 90 in Finland. This was 2005. This 300Tdi have now somehow slowly transformed itself with my assistance to more or less an off road car; 4.11 gears, Ashcroft shafts & CV's, ARB lockers, stronger radius arms, wide angle props and storage for spares and camping equipment etc. Also the winch, rock sliders and numerous scratches and dents sometimes draw too much attention. I had a normal car (Skoda Octavia Combi 4x4) but it was so boring (great car, but not for me) so I decided to buy an other, standard Defender as daily transportation. So now I have two Defender 90's, a 300Tdi and a Puma. I kept my forum name Td5 that I started to use when joining the various Land Rover / Off Road forums when I had the Td5. Apologize for the confusion. Back to topic. This problem is in my 2007 Puma air condition, the 300Tdi have no A/C. I verified the wiring loom, it's the compressor electric magnet that is pulling too many amps. It only have 0,3 Ohm measured with a good multimeter (Fluke). Brgds, Juha '96 300Tdi 90 '07 Puma 90 |

Sorry for my confusion. Where did you take your measurement from? I presume the 0.3 ohm reading was taken from the relay output C0712-87 (green cable) to earth? Did you or were you able to repeat the same check from the C0127-1 terminal on the clutch itself (purple incoming cable) or disconnect this cable and do the same check from the relay? This will show if you have an issue perhaps with that cable. I am unable at this time to pop out and carry out the same measurement. Maybe another knowledgeable and capable forum member could do this for you but I would estimate it should be somewhere in the region of 0.8 ohms with a 20 amp fuse for protection? I measured this value from the last plug, just before the compressor.
The cable from relay C0127 socket to compressor is now OK, I changed it. I would think the resistance should be above 1 Ohm as the 20A fuse is also feeding condenser fan in front of radiator. Brgds, Juha '96 300Tdi 90 '07 Puma 90 |

For info, the resistance of my spare compressor is 3.3 Ohms.
