Using winch solenoid to Isolate winch and 12v Anderson plugs
Hey peeps, Going to be fitting a winch and a 12v feed ( Anderson connectors front and rear) in the comming weeks. My original plans was to use Albright single Solenoids for each. This would mean I would have 3 solenoids, 1 - Dual Battery Isolator, 2- Winch Isolator, 3 - 12V Isolator.

Now that is a lot of room taken up. Then I got thinking hmm. Could I use a Albright Winch Solenoid for 2 of them. So could I have that what would normally be the Winch Out cable could be the Winch feed then the Winch IN cable be the 12V. Would this work and what issues would there be, Im guessing I could not run both at the same time but then that would be a STUPID load on the battery and alternator anyways.

So people what do you think ????

I just connnected the isolator to the alternator, then to the winch. the isolator sit nicely next to airbox

Dont want to have to bother with manual Isolators, Got spare switches so thats why Im using the solenoids

Just check their duty rating, if I'm understanding that correctly, your dual battery isolator will be on all the time the engine is going, the 12V isolator will be going when you want to jump start something and the winch one will only be on when the winch is available?

The datasheets for the Allbright solenoids are a bit scant on details but I can't see that being an issue. The only potential problem I can think of is leaving one on for ages and cooking the coil because they're meant for intermittent duty.

Most of the decent Albright solenoids are rated at 100% duty cycle so as long as you choose one of the heavy duty ones it will be fine.

You can do what you suggest, assuming you don't want both at the same time !

Use the +12v as the input as per the winch. You can then use F1 and F2 as the respective outputs as one of those is connected to the +12v depending on the activation state. It's worth checking that they are indeed isolated when the solenoid is not active in either direction. It should be OK as I've used a winch solenoid as a 12V/24V switch in the past (switching two 12v batteries from parallel to series) and that wouldn't work if F1 and F2 weren't isolated from each other and would have resulted in an "interesting" development ! Always worth checking though... http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/

Cheers for the reply, The Single Albright doing the Dual Battery will be on when needed. Then when I need the winch I will use one side of the double Albright and when I need 12v Power then I will use the other side, Cant see a time I will ever need both lol

Davew never thought of checking to see if they are both 'dead' when not in use. But cant see if being a problem other wise there would be winches running on their own all over the place lol

No, because winches need the armature connection to complete the circuit but, yes, it's pretty unlikely Smile http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/

Hey peeps wiring this up at the minute and got a bit stuck!!!

The solenoid has 4 posts 2 x unmarked which I'm guessing would be 'out' and 'in' then there is a + and a - . do I need to run the - to earth or will + and then onwards be OK????/

Cheers peeps
